It seems to be a dying tradition where I live in Idaho. Honestly, I always found it a little humorous, because it doesn't matter how remote, or close into town the dirt road is, so long as it's dirt you'll get the wave. But, it's the thing to do, so I've always played along and return the wave, sometimes initiate it. Do you wave on dirt roads?

I like to wave hello to whoever whether trail or rural roads with little traffic - albeit I'm probably more city slicker than not so there's still plenty of novelty there.

We live on a gravel road, in a small rural community. Everybody waves to everybody. If you're in a UTV, pickup, car, tractor, etc, hell, most that fly(little Cessna's or Cubs) when flying @ our AGL shake the wings at people on the ground.. who are waving at the plane. On the highway we wave at each other, when I see another 4Runner I wave, sometimes they give me a "who the hell was that" stare, but more than not, they wave back. Kind of extreme I guess, but we're in a friendly state. Forgot to mention, the ones that don't wave, we consider "tourists"!

When I'm out of state I do. At home, I never come across any dirt roads.

OH God, don't get me started! Those things have ruined the backcountry. I've encountered traffic jams far from any paved road due to those things.

Dirt roads? Nah. Actual trails, for sure. On more difficult trails, Jeep drivers give me the Jeep wave when they see me doing the same obstacles and offshoots they do.

In Central Wisconsin we have designated trails for ATV/UTV/snowmobiles, some of these trails are maintained better than so called gravel roads. In the state we have thousands of miles of trails that are cared for by hundreds of groups/clubs, for you to "stereotype" how UTV's have ruined the back country and tore up trails is shallow and narrowminded. As per any activity, a few can ruin it for many. I recall seeing several 4X4 vehicles make a road impassible in the spring thaw, that's just the way it goes sometimes. It is not uncommon to see 500 SxS's in certain areas of the state on a trail ride, especially during holidays.

I ride an ATV, there are a lot of trails around me that are restricted to 50" and under, so those car size SxS in my photo can't be on those trails. But I've been on 50" trails and come across 20 SxS. Y'all tend to herd up! lol In my area there are thousands of new SxS on the backroads and trails, and now there are gates, where there used to be no gates.

We have width restrictions also, it's one of those things, not sure who comes up with width rules.. but it's a rule. We don't have lots of gates, some where more population of people aren't familiar with the trail system, greater chance for a vehicle to drive on the trail. We also have a few miles of snowmobile trails that run across our property. Snowmobilers for the most part wave to each other, kind of a good crowd, but like I said in previous post.. a few can ruin it for the masses. There are signs on the snowmobile trail that say: "if you can't stay on the trail, stay home!", this is due to a bunch of the trail running across "crop land", and nobody wants new seeding kill.. it's costly. Just people that don't want to follow rules..probably the same people that wave to everybody! I'll continue to wave to all the people I meet on the roads, have a good day. BTW, love that Idaho country!
