What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

I've got a similar (same?) TEMU rack on the way. Reviews are all positive and the price is right. S'posed to be here Tues.

 

For five minutes there wasn't much in the way of any shrieking! At least not Photon but me, yeah…I need to give her a bath!

Only thing i will say is the front mounts need mounted. It came with rivnuts. After drilling into the roof, its plenty thick to just drill and tap with m8x1.25. No worries because if you decide to remove the rack you can just fill the holes with silicone. Also use thread sealant so you dont have to worry about leaks.

 

So, in spite of their "no cutting or drilling" statement, it's needed after all?

 

Atleast mine was.

 

They seem to be just fine, no noticeable vibration or road noise.

 

that’s why I got a Sherpa, the consensus was no drilling and a great system to prevent leaks.

 

When for an oil change. Guy told me I had sway bar disconnect. I didn’t know I did. Lol

Installed the rear recovery points that @djwantke recommended a few weeks ago.

Sprayed anti rust primer, then red paint to match the front recovery points (and also because it’s a well known fact that red gives 10 extra hp)

 

Westcott 1.7” Front 1.25” rear before and after:





New Morimoto headlights and smoked VLand tails. Please don’t spend an extra $120-140 buying the VLands from places like 4RL, Yota Exp, etc. You can get them for $200-220 on EBAY instead of paying $349 to these other places that buy them and mark them up yugely big.






Also did some interior light stuff, forgot to take pics. Will add tomorrow.

Why not use the trailer hitch as a recovery point? Also isn’t the bumper going to get damaged if you do use those new points?

 

Fair points.

In my case, I have a recovery hitch receiver and accessories, the two new points are simply extra for unusual recovery

 

In the pictures it looks closer to the bumper than it actually is. Only if pulling a rope upwards, it could damage the bumper. Pulling straight or down would clear it.

With that said, you're right, it's not ideal but this are meant (to me at least) as "emergency" recovery points in case I forgot my skid hitch or if I didnt initially plan on off roading but ended up in a situation where I got stuck or to pull a friend out of a unwanted situation (sand, snow, etc...)

When I plan on off roading, I usually have a hitch skid with a recovery point.

 

Fixed the squeak that I thought was suspension related. It was the hood bushing. I applied some lubricant, opened the drivers door and rocked it back and fourth and it was gone.

I also thought it could be the emergency brake bracket, it wasn’t, but I realigned these as well.

 

I'm digging that rear bumper and the available options.

By hand, pliers. It bends pretty easily.

Dropped a grand a week ago on 4Runner repair/upkeep, this week we had our cold snap and the 7 year old battery decided she has had enough, literally the day before I was going to hit up Walmart to replace it. ‍♂️

 

I'm really liking the bumper! I've researched five different companies, their features and options before deciding upon Dissent. From the cuts and bends, part fitment, welds and powder coating their construction quality exceeded my expectations.


One side benefit I didn't think about is that the bumper adds like another couple inches of depth to the deck...makes for a comfortable sitting area.

Yeah really digging that. I wish the Runner had a 2 piece tailgate.

I'd probably get it with the jerry can holder and the cooler rack. I'm not really wanting to mount the spare up there.

I was thinking the same thing. Id prefer to pull on the hitch ( 4 bolts instead of two). I also like using soft shackles for recovery.
