While in the process of installing sound deadening, I pulled the sub box to get behind it and I am wondering would it be beneficial to add polyfill or is it a waste?

Not looking at upgrading the sub itself as from I see the JBL system is an absolute nightmare to deal with.

    Thoughts on the polyfill?

on the stock JBL sub box, it'll be kinda useless and a waste, unless you just want to mute the output. The box itself doesn't have much space in it to begin with. If you want a different bass sound, then I would work on the other end with the DSPs or replacement amps out there.
If you're just wanting a cleaner/non rattle, then the sound deadening should be good enough to stop the echos and rattles.

What do you mean mute the output?

From my old days, I recall a cheap “upgrade” was to install polyfill behind boxes/speakers to improve the sound ever so slightly - so your saying this is pointless?

with the sound deadening, it is. Here's a good explanation on my thinking. Maybe it's not what you were thinking and I took it not as it was intended.

    https://www.diymobileaudio.com/threads/polyfill-the-magic-ingredient.154120/
"It is mimicking the sound decay of a box with more molecules exposed to frequency vibration. What is happening is the same principal as sound deadening. Polyfill is decreasing reverberation time, decay time whatever you want to call it. Whether this is a stadium, large room, or a box, same principal applies. To deaden it, decay time is shortened. a box with poly matches or mimicks the decay time of a larger box."

Thanks. So I’ve added a bit of it since I had it on hand, plugged it in and I never put my ears near the sub while playing but man that thing sounds muffled / weak.. is this the nature of the OEM sub?

more the under powered amp. It's powered for "just enough". The headunit is extremely under powered so the amp has to boost a lot! So it kinda only makes it like a minimal gain. Yes the woofer isn't competition grade but with a better headunit and amp that sub will be enough to make an old guy from the 90s happy in his old man truck without a box taking up the back area.

Ah! So reading online the entire sound system of the limited sounds like a unicorn. In order to wake up the rest of the system - is it as easy as adding a new amp or is it more complicated than that? I noticed the amp has 4x priority plugs on it so I doubt an off the shelf amp will accept those connectors ?

As a kid who's first mod in his sports
good questions. The answer will be based on what you want to hear from your truck. Everyone knowing you're coming down the street? Or I've grown to just want to know the bass is there?

Ive grown up - just like to know I have a “premium” sound system that has a sub in a cool spot. Don’t need the ricers to hear me.

Word. Then depending on budget and what you've already done. Speakers and headunit replacement is where I'd go next.

Metallic TRD has a good thread to check out
    https://www.4runners.com/threads/up...l-system-in-my-2022-trd-pro-full-build.41187/

And check out the plug and play packages from trail grid pro for custom replacement.

Just opinions obviously but the headunit is the most under powered component of the chain to get more power to that sub. Then you can decide about amps and higher power subs.
