Considering the Midland MXT275 with the Ghost antenna. Has anyone figured a way to mount an antenna to the stock roof rack rails? I don't have crossbars yet. I haven't decided if I want to permanently install are keep it temporary on an as needed basis. Interested in your setup...enlighten me!

The MXT275VP4 kit I have comes with the Ghost and mini mag mount antennas. The kit also contains a clamp base for the Ghost antenna that I don’t see why you couldn’t mount that onto one of the rooftop rails.

Before you get the Midland, look into the Radioddity DB20-G. The the DB20-G has better features and is less expensive. They are having a sale on a bundle with the radio that includes a magnetic antenna mount and a couple other accessories for an incredible price.

Take a little time and go to notarubicon's YouTube review on each of those radios and make up your own mind. Notarubicon can be a little strange, but he is an excellent resource for GMRS radio reviews.

They sell a magnetic base as well. If you can’t mount it to the stock rack or don’t want it up there all the time. I replaced my stock rack with a Sherpa Crestone and never looked back, significantly better with many mounting points.

I don't if it's the same person where I posted recently on a similar GMRS topic where the free magnetic antenna comes with the MXT275 is more than enough for my needs.

Unlike the ghost antenna where anyone can steal easily since the magnetic antenna comes as one piece the antenna and cable no one can steal unless they cut the cable. At that point it's useless.

Also the cable comes with stock magnetic antenna with MXT275 is low profile/ thinner cable vs the cable available to buy separately for the ghost antenna is pretty thick. I'm not a fan of the cable.

    Edit -
Adding a pic of mine now.

Best spot for your GMRS antenna, or really any antenna since it has a good ground plane:

I like it. Cheap, utilitarian, and effective. Looks cool plain. I used similar gate hardware. But you gotta have a gimmick here.

If you want to start selling ass-loads just start putting Punisher logos on it and call it something obnoxious like Extreme Overland Cult Over Consumerer Official Genuine GMRS Mounting Plate. Or leave it plain and send it with a free-range Grape Nuts donation fund sticker.

"Suburbia got you down and heading out for the trail to talk for you friends? Excerrent reception holder free-up other hand for beer, Macho. You air down now but no concern as dual pump compressor do more work after hard drive. Relax you bought all the hype toys but no have choose 4x4, you only had 4x2. Save up with this bracket...next time you rise up and buy Rivian or Grenadier. Remember they have same forums with sad guys but different SUV name too. We never satisfy, consumer more."

GM radios are cool in theory. But once you get rolling out there, the less you really want to talk to anybody. Try it. You'll see. You'll also want more attention to the immediacy of not crashing or rolling off the wrong way. Just like Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom intended it.

Im using the magnet antenna it comes with. Just stuck on my roof rack and shut the door on the wire. Easy AF.

    Removed when not in use.

Initially I wanted a bull bar antenna because it looks cool but it just felt like accesorising

Antennas can reflect off the mounting surface. So if range matters to you I suggest a magnetic mount close to center of roof. Run cable thru passenger rear door. The cable might be small enough in diameter to not get damaged when door closes. If damage/pinching possible lead cable thru slightly open window. There are gap filler plastics to stop air leaks.
