Do you have a photo of the finished product? Just curious.

The foam was an issue on early Tacomas. I assume that the foam material was changed to something more durable. Do any of you know anyone that actually had this foam fail in the last 15 years or so? A quick google search came up with no results for me. Just a few YouTube videos showing a fix for a problem that doesn’t seem to exist anymore.

I appreciate your knowledge as well as your comment. Since my Tacoma is the last model year of the 2nd Gen, then it would be logical to not classify mine as an early Tacoma. However, I am not willing to take the very expensive risk of assuming that the foam material has been changed. It is reasonable that Toyota changed the material because they didn't want to cover warranty claims for this type of avoidable failure. But was a TSB issued? I have not heard of one, or that anyone else has posted about it. Since my truck is beyond the 10 year emissions system warranty, I decided to make a very minor investment against a problem that "may no longer exist." I'm keeping this truck for as long as possible.

For a seal, there is an inset rubber o-ring style gasket on the underside perimeter of the lid that mates with the pump housing.

From what I read it sounds like there was a TSB or recall up until 2012. I don’t know how correct that is but I haven’t seen the issue being reported in newer trucks.

Maybe it's just me, and who knows why, according to some reports, some found red bits in the pump later on after doing this mod, but it sure seems like a wire-wrapped filter would be way less likely to disintegrate compared to a piece of foam.

Interesting. Wondering if, based on Toyota having known of this issue, later model T4Rs would have been fitted with the "improved" filter material? I can't say I know for sure what model years have reported pump failures from eating filters.

the one instance I read about someone who had the uni filter break down and take out their pump after 5 months, the T4R owner noted they "cleaned" the filter before installing it but didn't come back and answer the question as to what he cleaned it with.

I'll keep my original I think and inspect the uni on a regular basis and maybe replace it after a few years, only $20.

one thing I plan on doing is taking my uni filter mod apart to see if the inlet tube is bottomed out against the filter end plate, possibly limiting airflow.

I have had my Uni-filter on my truck for 117,000 miles / 6 years. I have never cleaned it because it doesn't run enough to need it. Today I decided to remove the cover to have a look inside for dirt and / or debris. These pictures are the results:

This filter is safe to use, comes pre-oiled in the package. I replaced mine with a new one.

Thanks for that. The uni is supposedly dry, no oil but mine sure looked and smelled a little "wet". You either live in the foothills at a fairly high elevation or the sierras I'm guessing. I recognize the pine pollen bomb. It dumps on us in Reno too.

Seems like the inlet tube isn't long enough to bottom out against the end of the filter, but it's a bit hard to tell without an actual measurement:

    it definitely doesn’t bottom out

Visually without measuring that's what I saw on install. Several mod adapters have commented on loud, whistling noise when the pump is running which suggests there might be a tight gap. Just wanting to confirm my modifications don't cause unexpected problems.

unless the snout on that plastic piece is more than 2 3/4 inches it will not bottom out on the Uni filter because the uni-filter is 2 3/4 inches long

Must be the same effect as aftermarket air intakes display. They all tend to make more noise.

Took a shot of mine while waiting for oil to drain today. I put this in 10/2023 and have not looked at it since. About 25k miles.
