My 6G came with a full size spare mounted on an OEM alloy rim. Of course the rim doesnt match the 4 optional TRD wheels it came with but I didnt think it would.

Yea my neighbor has a new CRV Hybrid. it has a new option called “SOL” for the spare tire. The space normally used for the spare houses batteries instead.

So they give you an aerosol tube inflator kit But hey look at what they are giving back in terms of being green. It’s only a slight inconvenience if you get a bad flat

When I test drove few of them I never looked under as I assumed offroad vehicles always get full size spare tire. Thanks to bunch of lifted 4runners & Tacoma at the dealership make me look under there. I was shocked. They had tire options 35x11.5R17, 285/75R17 but having this tiny spare with T175mm width giving ton of clearance under.

It’s ridiculous that they market these as off-road adventure vehicles but give you a donut for a spare. Do any wranglers not come with a matching spare?

It would be nice if trucks and SUVs that have space for a full size spare actually came with a matching wheel and tire. Then it could be put into the rotation and used verses sitting there with some occasional emergency use and eventually getting thrown out due to dry rot but with full tread left.

Yep, surprise! From immobilizers in a Hyundai to frame bump stops, can’t take anything for granted!

Although I do wish that’ll fit on the 5th gen since I would not mind a more compact spare spare (I got a second full size wheel anyway) and probably a non-trivial number of folks getting rid of it.

I did some search today and found that not all 6Gen 4runners have temporary space tire. So that's a good news.

I wonder if new 4Runners are getting softer, like in Tacoma world I see the diffs are smaller compared to previous gen and the axles have an indent/a thinner section allowing it to break, both front and rear. Don't know for sure if its the same story for 4Runners if 6gen diff are smaller than 5gen and if axles are weaker than 5th gens.

But I do give the credit that 6gen allow to run bigger tires easily vs 5th gen. With just a spacer you can run 35in tires. I don't see any abnormal cutting / chopping on the lifted 4runners at the dealership.

Do the iMax Force hybrid not get the spare (that would be my guess with the space used for batteries) but just a guess

On a quick search looks like the base trims like SR5 have temporary spare tire.

4R Hybrid battery packs are on top of the cargo area floor, raising it - same spot where the third row goes if equipped. (so they're mutually exclusive)

So nah, the hybrid TRD Pro has a full-size spare.

Donut spares are for lower trims, I bet just to save costs - not sure where in the lineup it gets bumped up to a full-sizer.

If I recall correctly, Toyota redefined “full-sized spare”. The diameter is full size, but not the width. When they say temporary spare, those are the true donuts. I mention it in case anybody looking to buy cares about the spare.

I believe that with maybe the trailhunter you get a spare that is exactly the same diameter *and* width of the regular tire. At least that’s the case with Tacomas. The real full size/width spares stick out under the tacomas a lot, and it might be the same with 4runners.

Oh yea, manufacturers can get fast-and-loose with definitions. Not sure if they still call it that but Kia referred to their AWD system as having a "locking center differential" on the window sticker for years when it was just an electro-hydraulic center clutch.

Similar effect yes, you can hit a Lock button yes, reasonably capable yes, but not a differential.

I know I'm getting off-topic but I'm suspicious of the Palisade XRT's announced "rear electronic limited-slip differential" for this very reason.
    • It's not called a Torsen LSD like the Explorer Timberline/Tremor.
    • They'd probably call it a twin-clutch or torque-vectoring if it was a twin-clutch system like Honda, Ford and Toyota have in some applications.
    • It's being reported by people taking it at face value from what I can tell with no technical details.
    • Most any "electronic limited-slip differential" I've seen means using the brakes especially in 2WD Toyota-land.
    • but to their credit and what would make the most sense to me, the E-LSD in the Elantra N is an actual clutched, computer-controlled LSD so if it's like that with some locking effect that'd be neat.

When I was looking at the various trims before buying my 6G I never even looked to see if it had a full size spare. Seems ridiculous that some 6G would come with some sort of smaller spare. My spare was the exact same tire that came on the other 4 wheels. I know because I had a flat at 1000 miles.

The cheap models get a donut and a bunch of poverty buttons inside
You gotta step up to any of the Premium, limited, or platinum to get a real spare.

I actually gave up trying to make sense of Toyota’s logic in deciding what trim gets a donut, which gets a baby “full size”, and which get an actual real big boy full size. My confusion was made worse by looking at the spares equipped on the 4th gen tacomas, which I think were following a different set of rules.

I’m kind of surprised yours has the big-boy-full sized spare. I could have sworn I saw a 6th gen OR with the baby full size spare.

I’m curious, how much does it stick out of the bottom? I recall seeing the tacoma trailhunter with the big spare, and it was pretty visible under there. Not sure if it sits different in the 4runner.

Is that the deciding factor on the ORs? Premiums get the real full-size, and the regular ORs get the fake full-size? I guess that makes a little sense (not really, but bear with me, I’m trying to make sense of the world).

Am I correct in recalling that some (base sr5) come equipped with a donut that is smaller than the fake full-size?

How have the Lexus turbo cars been in regards to reliability. I know they've been making NX200t's for like 10 years. Just curious if those have had reliability issues in their lifespan or if Toyota does know what they are doing with turbos.

Haha. Half the people on this board don’t know the difference between AWD, part-time 4WD, and full-time 4WD.

It sounds like there are three types of spares. Donut, full size temporary use and then a full size real tire that may match the other four. What wheel comes with the matching full size? How much money could even be saved with this many possible variations. Also how many vehicles leave the factory with the wrong type of spare?

The TRD Sport comes with the 8" screen cloth and a donut
The TRD Sport Premium comes with the 14" screen pleather and a full size spare
The TRD OffRoad comes with the 8" screen cloth and a donut
The TRD OffRoad Premium comes with the 14" screen pleather and a full size spare
The Limited and platinum come with 20s, fancy shocks, 14" screen, leather, better stereo, color matched body work, silver or black lettering, auto running board options, and a full size spare ect ect ect.
I "believe" some of the lower models have no spare, i cant confirm but i remember late last summer early fall when all the dealer shows were going on, there was a LOT of talk about the low end stuff not getting a spare.

The lower center dash and shifter console are all full of blanks too. You gotta get a ORP or Limited to fill half the blanks up. I think the Pro with all the options is the only one that is full.

I pulled the rear seats out
I hear you, but there's wear and tear associated with at least the Bright Finish stock wheels that some of us have. Put a nice, stock 17" alloy with that mirror finish up into the well and cinch it down, drive it offroad for 3 months and when you go to re-install it, the mirror finish will be scuffed up. Or, at least mine have gotten scuffed up.

But absolutely, a model year 2019 with a spare with a mint date of 2019, that tire will "age out" if you don't use it. I've put mine into rotation, but I'm not a Vanity Guy. With the black steel wheel, yes it does look less than spiffy.

According to the Toyota website, the OR and ORP both come with full size spare.

When toyota uses the term full-size spare, I think they mean the baby full-size spare which is very narrow. I think they have another name for the big full size spare, which is full width as well as full diameter.

From my understanding, they have a donut, a full size (narrow), and a full size (full width). So if I bought a OR (non premium), do they come with the donut, or the narrow full size?
