Didn't Toyota do something like this in the Lexus LFA?

Edit: after a quick Google, sounds like it might have just been engineering and exhaust tuning.

I've always thought of these fake engine noises as corny. I'd rather listen to a 4 cylinder than fake V8 noises.

“Not ready for prime time” means that the product is not ready for widespread use. In our typical human arrogance, many feel that we have solved the electric vehicle conundrum. However, in our zeal for fashionable causes we fail to realize that the tech and the infrastructure are simply not available yet. Our national laboratories have been working on battery and power generation technology for many decades, but truly meaningful breakthroughs have not been forthcoming since the emergence of nuclear power. Many battery designs are not even UL certified. In the future, it is my hope that we will have portable fusion generators that will bring clean power to all. That batteries will become largely redundant, as electricity would be conveyed through the roadway. That vehicles will hover over the roadway with magnetics, reducing the need for tires. However, we will still need lubricants, plastics, and fuels for other applications and it is unrealistic to expect that every road will be electrified. Lots to think about. I use a great many electric tools here on the farm (our 48v golf cart is indispensable) and as I grow older I’m thinking about an e-bike. These are the devices we should concentrate on developing at this stage. This is what will develop the tech and condition users.

I’ve “purchased” movies on Amazon that despite being purchased are no longer available to stream. (I’ve since curtailed that practice and instead pay a visit to the local CD Trader to buy used DVDs instead.) What’s to prevent car companies from changing their minds after the fact?

Nothing. Depends on the specifics of execution and the fine print but is it just a permanent toggle?

or does it have to phone home online periodically to “validate your license” - then you’ll be SOL if the server or cellular infrastructure changes.

But I don’t expect the average consumer to think of those things and they shouldn’t have to.

That will go over as well as BMW trying to charge their customers for things like heated seats. The backlash was swift and brutal.

Gotta love it. Certainly there must be a convenient number or contact to request a refund, right? I’m sure there are banks of Amazon telephone agents at the ready to deal with your situation. Or at the very least a helpful AI chatbot agent with the authority to resolve the situation?

I would hope that most would respond like that, but it seems they keep trying crap like this every once in a while to see if people have given up caring. Unfortunatly, I do think people will end up just accepting it.

Eventually, the practice might even be defended. After all, I’ve seen people defend vertical videos because it reduces the need to strain your eyeballs, since you don’t need to move them side to side to see the whole picture.

Car manufacturers pushing subscription services is an admission they no longer have anything new to offer.

On many occasions I have fucked with my co-workers. I've answered calls at work:

"Hi! I'm not here right now, but if you leave your name, number and reason why you're bothering me please do so after the beep!" Then I pause for like 5 seconds. Then I say "Are you still waiting for the beep? Don't worry it's coming...eventually!"

Eventually the person clues in to the fact that I'm fucking with them, they laugh (a few times they've gotten mad) and say "You really got me. You sounded like a machine!"

I have zero tolerance for subscriptions. Adobe is to blame. I had been using Photoshop since back in the early ‘90’s and version 2.0. It was really expensive. >$650. And since then I dutifully payed for all the upgrades. Then in 2002 Adobe announced they were switching to a subscription model. No problem, I thought. This software is mature by now. Whatever new features are added in the future I can do without. I’ll just keep using what I got. And then Adobe bricked my software. That I paid for. So I jumped ship and abandoned Adobe. They lost a customer for life. It meant enduring a painfully steep learning curve while I acclimated to other image editing software, but it was worth it.

And this is why good lawyers are needed in society…makes me want to buy a car and subscribe to the heated seats to see if they would cover them after the warranty period. If you are paying a subscription for the service, then they need to maintain the infrastructure (the heated seat mechanism) to deliver those services!

Something tells me that they would just cancel your subscription and then refund the subscription fee back-dated to the time you reported the issue.

They wouldn't do that because of the issues that would come up.

A warranty is a contract that the seller and buyer enter into together with set terms, limitations and guidelines. If either one violate those terms there are monetary penalties that will be incurred. In short: If VW sells me a subscription to unlock "More EV range" but the vehicle never achieves that range then I can request my money back because they didn't honor the terms of the agreement. (They never delivered the service that I bought).

If they tried to cancel me, they can do that and even offer to never sell me a subscription again. But they have to honor the terms of the agreement while it was in effect.
