    Hello y’all,

I humbly request your collective guidance & direction.

Is it worthwhile to tune the engine of a ‘25 4R?

Does tuning void the manufacturers warranty?

Has anyone had any positive/ negative experiences with OVERLAND TAILOR TUNING?

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I anxiously look forward to your response.

    Regards,

    robert18452

I don’t have experience personally with tuning but I think this may help speaking generally.

    1) It probably depends on the objective, I don’t think it’s worth it until others have taken the plunge and you’re out of the powertrain warranty.

And especially since this isn’t a performance vehicle or something people would be keen to tune, I’m skeptical anything has been thoroughly tested or has enough of a sample size to help.

    2) Not the entire warranty, but it can be a blinking-red liability if any engine or tuned-component-related failure occurs.

You can think you’ll revert to stock before taking it in but that’s assuming there’s no electronic flag or trail that might be left.

As for the company, you can see if they’ve had any luck with the similarly outfitted Tacoma, that’s been around longer and probably with more anecdotes available.

I have had 3 different Tacoma's tuned with OTT through the years. I currently have a 6th Gen 4Runner tuned. I bought it new with 11 miles on it. I had it tuned the next day with 84 miles on it. I now have 10,685 miles. No issues, no complaints with any tuned vehicle I have had. Based on my previous experience with OTT on my other vehicles, tuning the 6th Gen was an easy decision. Not to mention, their dyno data shows higher gains from the 2.4 than what was gained with the 4.0 or the 3.5.

Could the tune end up voiding some part of the warranty? Maybe, maybe not. Tuning is not really different than any other modification you do to your vehicle. If the warranty provider believes, and can prove, that your add-on or modification directly caused a failure or issue, then they may void that warranty claim. If I installed a lift and oversized tires would my warranty still cover my wheel bearings and CV axles? Maybe?

If your interested in improving your performance so you can thoroughly enjoy your 4Runner, get the tune! If warranty is your biggest concern, keep it stock. Completely stock.

What is your financial risk tolerance if there is a warranty issue in the future?

If you run the OTT tune do you have to run 91+ (super) to get the results their dyno sheet produces?

If you want the full output potential, yes. We've done some specific testing on a 5th Generation 4Runner where we did a separate dyno test specifically for 87 octane to show where our tune, when used with 87, falls vs stock.

For the 6th Generation 4Runner, just like most other modern engines, they love octane. The more you can feed them, the better they will generally perform. However, with that said, we've specifically worked the 6th Generation 4Runner calibration to still provide a significant boost in output/driveability over stock without pigeonholing you into running premium fuel only. You will not have any issues running 87 Octane fuel on our calibration.
