Alright, let's be honest; who here is considering a 6th gen?

Maybe it's a result of designers trying to make a vehicle stand out?

I have heard many complaints of one vehicle looking too similar to another. The problem is that there's only so many things you can do with a basic design. So, they add creases and odd shaped fender flares to make it look different.

    Just a thought. :notsure:

We got one with the 6th gen at least. Function might be a little better at some things but worse at others than the 5th gen. Aesthetics are up for debate. :D

Guy at the end of my street just got a Heritage Blue TRD ORP to replace 5th gen silver SR5.

Got to admit, it looks good with the black flares, door handles and badging.

The heritage blue is dang good looking. Is it enough to convince a move on from the 5th gen? Time will tell...:D

China is now a dominant market. So design language that appeals to that customer base wields more power. And the Chinese are known for preferring over-wrought origami-esque designs with countless creases, ducts, etc.

Having said that, I thought the 4Runner was predominantly a North American market vehicle. If so, tamed down styling preferences and designs should hold more weight.

The market is crazy. Heck I walked a Ford dealer a few weeks ago for kicks and a 2025 Mustang with the 5.0 had a label that the transmission was from China. So much for American muscle I guess.

I think most of the Buick line up is made in China also which explains why most of them look like hell

This is my daily and i love it. I really really really like it a lot.

I remember reading / seeing something years ago about how a Buick in China is like a Mercedes or BMW here in the states. Its a status symbol over there, they all strive to be able to drive a Buick. Its like the big "you've made it" thing over there.

    From the innernet:
Historically, Buick was associated with powerful and influential figures in China, and that perception continues to this day.
In China, Buick is perceived as a luxury brand, a status symbol of wealth and power, especially the Buick GL8.

My biggest confusion with the styling is that the front of it could almost be seen as a refresh of the 5th gen 4Runner, but then it has the rear end that looks heavily inspired by the RAV4. yet bears the Highlander name plate with low to no resemblance to the current gen Highlander.

The Japanese are known to use the common parts bin. A little from here, a lot from there, stretch this, nip that and voila a new vehicle.

At least the Japanese could make something new from the parts-bin raid… GM would make three or four vehicles, pretty much the same but with different badges and decorations.

The “turn a Cavalier into a Cadillac (Cimarron)” venture might be the most goofy version of “badge engineering” I can think of right now.

So does the Heritage Blue look better in person than in pictures? Completely subjective I know when it comes to colors. If I eventually update from my 2015 I was leaning towards silver (Cutting Edge).

Not I just based on the price increase alone. Not interested at all with the huge price increase of the OFP.

Except ALL of the manufacturers did the same thing at the same time. Like everyone changed from logos across the back to spelling out the name of the manufacturer. Including the creases and odd shapes. IMO most of the new designs are hideous! But, I am just one person, and I am done buying vehicles for the foreseeable future unless I live a lot longer than I think I will.

And I think @McSpazatron is right - there is something in the water!

Nah. I am eyeing retirement in 10-15 years so intend on driving my 5th gen into retirement. If I did want a modern update I'd likely skip the 6th gen and go to a Landcruiser or the Lexus. But the 5th gen is the practical choice.

My #1 concern about using heavier viscosity crankcase oil, is the increased probability of gumming up the PVC system. My #2 concern is, an increased probability of dirt and debris remaining in the engine and staying there when we're changing the oil. The pattern I've seen with some automobile engines is, folks switch to a heavier viscosity oil to overcome an oil leakage problem, and I've seen the PVC system get gummed up and this tends to make the oil leakage issue worse. I'd also suggest that folks tend to want to use the heavier oils on the supposition that you'd get another few seconds before the motor fails, if you have a catastrophic oil loss situation. There's a grain of truth here, obviously, but it has been 47 years since I had the contents of my crankcase dump on me - a lot of other things are more likely IMHO.

    +

Oh, and I think a heavier oil would mean a quieter motor. But the motor on these 4Runners is so loud, I've given up on any hopes to make it quiet enough to make me smile. I'm just going to get used to the racket.

Since you’re saying oil leak > heavier oil > clogged PCV - I suspect a lot of that could be the correlation that both happen to high mileage engines and it could be an exacerbating factor on a PCV valve that has been ignored.

That and there isn’t a huge difference between 0W-20 and 5W-30 viscosity across the temperature range so whatever grit is still going to move if hot and there’s still the oil filter. (of course I’m only really speaking about moving one notch up)

It’s just the continuation of our nation’s anti-science streak.

Could be a good time to be a rural dentist, but residing where both fluoridation and dental care are unavailable is not an ideal combination for resident children.

Agree. It doesnt impact me in the least but a friend had a FJ and I remember how the seats folded down, much better than the new 4R. the rest of the truck is amazing though.

I bought my 22 earlier this year because I wanted to wait. If I had no choice I'd dive in. That being said, I'm watching closely and in a few years would consider it..

You have not walked by a new 4R or Landcruiser sitting at idle have you? They are incredibly loud at idle, they make my 4th and 5th gens seem like Honda civic quiet. (we all know they are not)

Absolutely not. I haven't seen any comparisons between the 5th and 6th gen that came out favorable towards the 6th gen

A towing comparison most likely would. But, a lot of folks don't tow with them, so it's probably not a big selling point.

There are definitely plenty of complaints from reviewers. But, the members here who own them seem generally pleased with them.

Were many people buying previous gen 4Runners for the driving experience? That’s a BMW thing. I think most people bought them for their toughness and incredible reliability. Will the 6th gen be that reliable? Maybe but I highly doubt it.
