Has any 5th gen owners purchased and installed this Baxter product? I'm considering doing so, unless someone here really says run, run away very fast. I would plan on using Wix brand filters if switching to this mod.

Apparently the stock skid plate shield will no longer fit with this Baxter part without interference, so I'd have to go to a TRD or after-market skid plate shield as well.

I like the idea of the claim they make regarding using the Baxter adapter "Retains more oil post-filtration for fast oil delivery and oil pressure at startup".

It's expensive, in addition to having to switch to a different skid plate shield!

I had one on my '21 Tacoma loved it! When I acquired my '24 4R it was one of the first mods I did along w/RCI engine skid. Very happy with the adapter. Add a Fumoto or other E-Z drain valve and oil changes become less a mess and very quick to do. I also subscribe to using a Wix oil filter as well. All Good :)

Is it a proprietary filter size? Or can get filters from toyota, fram, etc as long as it's the right size ( whatever that may be)?

No. These are 300K+ engines using OEM parts and regular maintenance.
The key words here are "idea" and "claim".

Funny how the guy in the video is all for using the Toyota recommended oil viscosity, but thinks the Toyota recommended (since that's what it comes with) oem filter and filter housing are garbage. I don't know if I buy the "no backflow" claim by Baxter, either.

And $300? You weren't kidding it's expensive. Pus the cost of a replacement skid plate if you're running oem non-TRD skid plates...

To me why? The OG setup/ filter been proven to work extremely well! Many hundreds of millions of miles already. An other solution looking for a problem to me! If you are afraid of the plastic housing go for the aluminum one, save the money for beer or good wine.

Nope. For what? It’s just more leak points and you’re replacing an aluminum filter canister with an adapter and tin or whatever material they use filter. No thanks on losing the skid.

That is a bogus/moot claim for a filter mounted on the bottom of the engine lol. Oil doesn't drain out of the filter cap when the engine is off. There might be some merit to the claim if the filter housing was at the top of the engine (like the Chrysler Pentastar 3.6L), but it's irrelevant for the 5th gen 4.0L.

My concern is losing the factory bypass valve built into the filter cap center tube. You're then at the mercy of the bypass valve in the spin-on filter. Even if you use a Toyota brand filter from e.g. 4th gen, there's no guarantee the bypass valve opening pressure is the same. You risk oil starvation and engine damage if the spin-on filter's bypass valve was designed to open at a higher pressure.

On the Baxter Engineering site they provide a list of Wix Filters that go with each adapter. You can then cross reference as you like to another brand. Wix is an excellent product I'd stick with their recommendation.

For me, that's way past the, Buy once-Cry once thing.
And if my oil changes went quicker, my nap time underneath the 4R would be cut back too.

Shhhh, don't give the execs at Baxter any more inspiration. Before long they'll be dreaming of trillion-dollar valuation too.

All righty…. I’m back checking my post. Thanks for the many replies. I think I’ve now been talked out of doing it, based on a lot of your replies.

For those of you who converted to the Baxter, I’m very glad to hear you like it and it’s working well for you. Thanks again. I guess I’ll apply one of my favorite sayings to this now that I think of it- “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

I like the idea a lot since I do miss the can a teeny bit but I don't think I'm willing to drop that much on such an effort at this time.

I would not expect any mechanical benefits and it's technically another point of failure.

If I was going to do such a thing, I'd probably think about doing a whole relocation to get back that filter-on-top-of-engine 4th gen magic but eh, I currently elect to change my filter every 10k (pls use another thread to debate it if desired) which isn't annoying - and I get to take a look underneath the skid which is probably for the best long-term anyway.

Yes, I noticed that. I just changed my oil and filter the other day. It had 4,366 miles on it, but my change it every 6 months limit had arrived.

When my oil was draining from the engine oil pan it didn’t look that bad- it was much more translucent / see-through. LOL…..

Whelp, with this oil change the other day, I’m now running with that Costco / Kirkland / Warren 0W-20 Full Synthetic. After being a Valvoline guy for many years. I am sticking with an OEM Toyota oil filter, and will continue my 5,000 mile or every 6 months change intervals.

I like being able to see exactly what's present on and in the used element. I can think of some guys I have known, various vehicles, with spin on filters where they had an issue but the issue was concealed inside the filter where they didn't spot it - until nearly too late.

To me, the R + R of all the protective plates are what make these 4Runner oil changes a PITA. The R + R of the cannister is not the crux of why we have to plan around these oil changes. Oh, and having a truly outsized amount of oil available on hand to refill the crankcase.

I hate this single push-pin on the front plate. Whose idea was this? $#@#!

That push-pin you mention was missing on mine from the first time I did my first oil and filter change. I’ve just never bothered to replace it.

The back edge of that filler piece sandwiches between the front of the Talons engine skid and the cross member, so there's no bolts or push pins required on that side in my case.

Baxter could potentially pull in decent cheddar by offering its own engine oil -- Baxter Oil Filter Adapter Approved Engine Oil.

No. I don't see the value or the gains really. This thing sounds like the catch can thread we had a few days ago. Just another gadget and more :spending:.

Meanwhile some 2TR and 3RZ people convert to a cartridge filter, because they can drain the filter bowl and make less of a mess
