Hello, I am currently evaluating a used 2018 Toyota 4Runner in Cavalry Blue TRD Pro trim and would appreciate some guidance on what constitutes a fair price. The vehicle has 120,000 kilometers and a single insurance claim resulting from a crash. The crash caused damage to the front bumper and one fender—both of which were replaced. The passenger-side window was scratched by flying glass from another vehicle, which required its replacement. The same glass debris also scratched the passenger-side door, which has since been professionally repainted.

Both front headlights were replaced, even though only one was broken, the other front headlight had a scratch on it. The Toyota repair shop replaced the scratched headlight in order to milk the system, which increased the repair bill — making the incident appear more extensive than it actually was; the total repair bill was $20,000 CAD. Importantly, the airbags were not deployed, and there was no frame damage.

Given that all damage was cosmetic and repairable, and the vehicle remains a well-equipped TRD Pro with moderate mileage, I am trying to determine a reasonable offer. How much should this history affect the value compared to a clean, unblemished example? Any insights or comparable sales would be greatly appreciated, and please answer in Canadian dollars, thank you.

A lot of people recommend getting an Off Road Premium over the TRD Pro and save some money. I'd personally pass on a vehicle with that large of a repair bill.

Hello, there is no rust, and the interior condition is 9 on a scale of 10 due scratches in the trunk area, also around the key ignition starter due to sometimes missing the hole.

Could you please let me know why you would pass with that large of a repair bill? Thank you.

I would not feel comfortable keeping it long term if it had that kind of damage and would search for a different 4Runner. That is what I personally would do even if this 4Runner looks in good condition.

I bought mine certified pre-owned but after a couple of years still had to do some work on it. Same with other used cars I've bought all in good condition but after a year or two had to do spend a bit of time on to make nice. A couple years from now something might pop up in regards to the repairs done. Just my 2 cents.

I appreciate your response, would you be concerned even if all the repairs were done by Toyota, and there is full documentation of all the repairs? The certified pre-owned + used cars that you bought, did they have accidents, were they all 4Runners? What might pop up in regards to the repairs done, can you please provide an example(s)? Thank you.

Yes I would be concerned even if the repairs were done by Toyota even if full documentation was done. There will always be another 4Runner that you can buy.

2015 4Runner Trail Premium and 2020 BMW M340i Drive. The 4Runner had an impact on the right side that the CarFax said was minor and has not been noticeable. The shocks on both seemed to need work done and on the 4Runner replaced them with Blisten 5100 shocks after a couple years. Sold the BMW to pay for some house repairs. Then just miscellaneous things like battery replacement, brake replacement, etc...The point is that even certified it's still used and after a while I had to spend some time on the 4Runner to make sure it was running well. Again just my two cents and good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Did the shocks for your 4Runner need to be replaced due to mileage and/or due to the accident? When you bought your 4Runner, what was the mileage? At how many miles did you need to replace the shocks in your 4Runner? Thank you.

Scotty Kilmer at 2:53 indicates that since the frame of the 4Runner was not damaged, then the 4Runner is fine. https://youtu.be/gr6Jyb8kug0?si=MbJyWbRx6pO4V7H4

48,000 miles when I bought, replaced the shocks 3 years later after putting about 20,000-25,000 miles on her. I don't think it was bc of the accident. The Blisten 5100 shocks are recommended by this community and are a popular option. The 4Runner sits more upright as far as I can tell.

Also recommend doing a search on here over the TRD Pro exhaust drone. Some people say it's a bit loud. You're still going to win regardless though if you get this 4Runner or another. Just in compliments alone I've never had a vehicle that so many people liked than my 2015 4Runner. The stuff I've done aren't like the car breaking, just updates to keep it running well as a long term investment since these vehicles are known to go like 250,000 miles.

I find it suspicious that the frame looks ok for that much mileage or Kms especially in Canada. What part of Canada?

I would think so to that much mileage in cold, salty and wet environment in summers and springs you would have some rust. Did the current owner just cover it up? I would make sure it does not have some sort of temporary spray to cover up some rust.

If the mileage was much less (garaged in winter) it would make sense but not with that much mileage

Thank you for the detailed response, I appreciate it. When you have time, could you please let me know how much you paid for the Blisten 5100 shocks? Next, do you know if 5th gen. 4Runners will increase in value due to inflation? If not, do you know a formula to calculate 4Runner depreciation, or is there a website, or app that calculates 4Runner depreciation? Also, how much would you offer for the 2018 TRD pro Cavalry Blue 4Runner?

Ad the same cost for labor as the part and it's in the ballpark. I don't know about depreciation but a lot of people buy a 4Runner to keep it long term. Not really vehicles to trade in 3 years from now. Drive it til the wheels fall off or you can't resist the 6th generation 4Runner anymore. You could check the blue book price and/or put an offer like $2500 below there price and see what they say.
