Thank you all for your help! I got it installed. The front bar did not slide easily and was an extremely tight fit, but the rear bar was smooth. The written instructions you posted here (which did not come with the gear) help with placing the rubber stops. Thank you!! Happy Trails!

Today I drained and refilled my rear differential fluid. It looked alittle milky to me almost like some water got in. Decided to relocate the diff breather vent up high behind the tail light using about 8 feet of tubing, a new breather vent and a barb fitting. 20250805_100835.jpg 20250805_100305.jpg 20250805_100311.jpg

just a thought, but it might be better to route that behind the light on the inside that way, no water or dust could ever get to it

I did think of that but then again, got afraid I might smell it from the inside. I sleep back there on some remote trips about 20 ish times per year.
There's no way I'd be submerging that deep in water and it's gotta be way better protection than the way it came oem.

ahh forgot about diff smell venting naturally into the rear interior. Good catch!

Nice. Haven’t kept up with the thread, what project is that for? I really love me a good bracket. The are under-appreciated in the world of thing-holding.

Looking good. I checked my stash last night, thinking I may have a M12x1.25 tap from previous jobs, turns out I have M8 & M10...need a trip to the hardware store.

I have not done this mod, but here is what I understand about it.

    1. The OEM setup is the one-way valve that purges excess (heated) air pressure out of the rear differential housing, and not allowing air (or water) to re-enter. The problem with that, as reported by those who drive through deep water, is that valve creates a vacuum in the housing which conceivably could be strong enough to suck water in via the wheel bearing seals. Especially if the housing is rapidly cooled by water immersion. Or a failed valve itself which could allow water in.

Therefore the gold standard has been to route a tube to a high location and terminate it with a “breather”. That is, a filter that allows two-way air flow, not a one-way valve like the original OEM one. That valve would defeat the purpose of preventing a diff housing vacuum, but at least the high location would keep the valve from being immersed.

There are threads here and in the other popular forum of the parts that were used to accomplish this.

    Hey guys, just a FYI.
I did the scuba mod on my 2014 and my 2021, the breather is routed up to the jack compartment and have never experienced any differential fluid aroma.
Maybe someone has, but I don’t remember reading on either of the 2 forums.
I like my location, the breather is not exposed to dirt or water.

This is true. Cold water, warm diff fluid, one way valve, vacuum created by cold water on warm diff, sucks unwanted water into the seals.
Remember these seals work to keep oil in, not to keep water out.
These are the parts I used.

Installed Scuba Mod on Rear Differential & Diff Locker

Cut the hole with a hole punch in rubber plug # 90950-01958, inserted fuel line, routed it, removed OEM one-way valve from differential, disconnected the 1/8” breather line from the diff locker, connected those to the fittings on the “tee” .

    Parts Used:
    (1) 90404-51026 Toyota 1/4" Fuel Line Union
    (1) 1/8" NPTF Brass Tee
    (1) 1/8 X 1/8 HB Male Adapter (1/8" Hose ID X 1/8" Male NPTF Adapter)
    (3) 1/4 X 1/8 HB Male Adapter (1/4" Hose ID X 1/8" Male NPTF Adapter)
    (1) 1/8" Brass Pipe Plug
    (1) 1/4" Brass Pipe Plug
    (1) 2 Port Manifold with Filter
    6' of 1/4" Fuel Line
    Hose Clamps to fit.
Aluminum Bracket fabricated: I made mine out of a piece of 1/8" thick aluminum cut to size, bead blasted it and marked & drilled the holes.
Brass machine screws, washers (flat and lock) and nuts to attach manifold to bracket.
Mounted in the Bottle Jack Compartment with 1/4” SS cap screw, flat, lock washer and nut.

I might’ve gone too thick with the primer. or maybe not. Surface of the steel is a little bit fuzzy, The instructions and Google suggest sometimes having to lightly sand after some coats of primer and paint. Perhaps I should do that then hit it with more black to get a smoother finish less fuzzy?

I would call it finished myself and install them, they're going to catch road debris under the truck anyway and get peppered. I did one coat of primer on mine and then two coats of Rustoleum, yours look better than mine.
