Hello all just purchased a 2018 sr5 and looking to mount 2 Hobie outbacks on top. Oh will be on highway speeds around 75mph. What is needed here? Attached a picture of rooftop. Also looking to store upside down flat with no strings going to the front and back of the vehicle.

I have the compass. I have a single one. I use Thule square cross bars and Hullavator. Best setup ever, I imagine Outback will be heavier and will benefit from side loading. You may want longer cross bars. Expensive but I can not imagine car topping heavy kayaks without it.
Unless you wanna go with the trailer route.

I think the outbacks are around 35” wide each i see a few manufacturers selling 70”+ wide crossbars. What do you use for straps tie-downs?

tie downs are what came with hullavator. I don't use the additional ones to tie down front and back of kayak, since most of the time I am not on highway with it.

It looks like the boats may be made of rotomolded polyethylene so I included one summary of guidelines. It's recommended to transport them right side up in kayak cradles. Bow lines are more important than stern lines and it's easy to make them part of your system. Without bow lines you'll have to strap the boats down extra tight and that's the other key factor (besides sunlight/heat) for damaging the boat. I drive around 75 mph too and when there are strong headwinds or crosswinds I think you'd be screwed without bow lines or cradles.

I was thinking about routing a rope or similar through the scupper holes for emergencies just in case of failure. Average travel time may be around 45 minutes one way. Trying to prevent getting a trailer if possible.

I would suggest a Continental kayak trailer, your back will thank you. I have an outback and a Revo and they are much easier to deal with on a trailer.

Im not to concerned about the lifting aspect been doing it for a while. Without the mirage drive its only about 80lbs. Doing a bit of research Ive seen a few set ups for top mount hobie’s just trying to get the best set up.

That is incorrect for Hobie. Hobie manual mentions that for storage and transport it should be upside down. I usually drive ~15 mins to my reservoir and don't feel the need to do that but long term storage is upside down on saw horse.

Over the top setup, hullavator is pricey but in my opinion worth it. I prefer it mainly for the ease and back comfort. I am sure if that is not an issue there are other cheaper options for you.

I was looking at the hullavator. Would I be able to travel with 2 hobies on top though? Also shows a 75lb load capacity.

OP, have you been in touch with the people at etrailer.com?
They seem to be really good at suggesting carriers for various items (skis, canoes, kayaks, roof boxes, etc).
