What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Took my wife for a trail ride today and had opportunities to use 4 hi, 4 lo, and locked the rear differential, and in general appreciate my truck more than ever. We still have a ton of trees down from a spring ice storm in northern michigan. Plus with recent rains there are plenty of water holes. So a lot of trails have trees down that drivers (mostly 4 wheelers and side by sides) had opened up but not very wide. In places i had to manually move trees (didn’t take my chainsaw, but could have used it) and pull in the side mirrors. And i ran into large mud holes and loose sand hills. My previous full size truck or for that matter this 4runner with a high mounted top light bar would have never made it through the tight spots and low hanging branches unscathed. I probably do have a couple new pin stripes under the layers of dirt too, lol. We even ran into a logging operation on one trail that completely obliterated the trail in a sea of skidder tracks. In other words a very fun day for this old fart and my wife.

I got the TRD skid installed, though I failed at Saker’s upgrade. (Issues with the rearward tapped holes.) I’ll work with it some more the next time I have it down for the oil change.

With the recent Amazon sales, bought 2x195W Renogy 16BB solar panels to replace the 2x100W EcoWorthy ones I had installed on top of my roof top tent. I keep my 12V in my vehicle from late May to early Oct, and it’s run by an EcoFlow Delta 2 Max. Parked in my south facing driveway, it can run my fridge for about 3 days. The 4Runner cabin gets hot so the fridge uses a bit more power, and the Delta 2 Max also runs its fans. On avg my old set up produces 80W (about 20W starting around 8am and 6:30pm, and mid day around 140W-160W at peak). The new Renogy panels are bigger (1.8x) and heavier (2.1x). These new panels are amazing! Sitting in my driveway I peaked today at 410W! Driving around I actually hit 433W! At one point I stopped for gas, parking under the station’s canopy. The light reflecting off the parking lot, up on the canopy ceiling was enough to generate +40W. Honestly, if I knew these panels worked so well I probably would’ve only bought one. I work from home, so there are some weekdays where I don’t even start my vehicle and plug in the powerstation to charge it back up, as old solar set up was only good to extend it. Now I don’t have to worry about it. May not even need my alternator charger.

Installed Lasfit LED turn signal bulbs just now. Wow what a difference compared to those $3 amber bulbs. Now I’ll have to swap out the rears to match

 

simple led strips under the hood.. turns off when hood is shut..

perfect to find those missing push locks for the rad cover.

 

That reminds me, i need to replace the hood insulation.

Finally...Got some help today (shoulder replacement has limited me a wee bit) my daughter installed my RCI A-Arm Skid Plates, while I successfully changed my cabin and air filters...

 

no need for taking out 10-12 of them to access things.. i only kept two of them on, on each corner.. it's secure enough..

 

like it alot.. no rAgrets (movie joke) on the purchase/install..
