Gobi Roof Rack

@Daytonaviolet - thanks a lot for your help. Yeah, I’ve seen the specs, but one of the most important metrics isn’t there: usable length and width inside the basket.

 

Answering my own question, I talked to Gobi today and according to them it's 78" between the front riser and the rear upper bar on a 5th gen 4Runner.

 

Just now seeing your initial question. I went out and measured my rack and got roughly 78.5" from the front riser to the rear riser, and then measured 41" across from one side rail to the other.

 

Thanks for this! The reason why I'm asking this, is that I'm still debating between a roof top tent (CVT Mt. Hood) and a ground tent (Oztent RV3 or RV4). I was hoping the ground tent would fit lengthwise inside the basket, but it seems it won't. I have not found someone who actually has this combination, therefore I'm going by specs.

 

What about a gazelle t4? I have one and it fits

 

The Gazelle T4 looks a bit too fragile for my taste. I'm often in areas with high wind and I don't see how this construction could possibly hold up to that. For other conditions it's probably okay, but I don't want even think about sitting/sleeping in this in conditions I have had a few times with my ground tent.

 

Just figured I would post here since there isn't normally good press regarding Gobi. I ordered my Gobi rack on March 15 and received an email last week stating they would be charging my card and shipping it this week. My card was charged this morning. I received communication without having to chase anyone there down and I fully expected a wait of 8+ months based off of this but 11 weeks seems to be it for me.

 

Get an aluminum rack. I have a gobi and if u actually use it it will rust. My stated lead time was also 13 weeks and recieved after 40.

 

Hey. Don’t be a Debbie downer. Rust is the new in thing. . Yeah I didn’t know I was moving to NC when I got mine. Now I wish I got aluminum. I tried changing it out but couldn’t find a buyer willing to buy it from me for a fair price. Haven’t tried since

 

I think its more of a common sense thing than just it will rust. I use mine frequently, but I don't use it to haul rebar.

 

Yep. If you do wear off the powder coating in a couple of spots, touch it up.

Does anybody have any pictures of theirs with multiple dry bags on it and how you attach them I know it sounds like a silly question I'm just curious highly considering one of these but primarily would run multiple large size dry bags on it

 

Not the best picture, but I few dry bags on the roof from Virginia to Washington. Basically just did a few crosses of straps and called it a day. No issues for a few thousand miles.

Absolutely. Love the look and functionality. And best of all, I can walk on my roof to secure loads.

I'm happy with my Gobi so far. I waited almost exactly 8 weeks from order to install. Which dramatically beats the wait time on my RSG sliders, which I'm still waiting on.

Rust gang here. Not just spots where the paint chipped off (their brackets seem designed to do this) but the entire mesh surface.

It took 10 months to get a passenger ladder for my FJ. They do make a good solid products.

 

Two years with mine and no rust or blemishes. Coolers and travel bags stowed up top several times a year.

 

18 months and no rust here. I am near salt water, but I have not had any metal to metal contact with mesh other than washers / screws. Basically just traction boards and a rifle case. (And shoes & Knees)

 

been loving mine. carrying ladders, pelican cases, fishing rods, put a chair up there one day to hang out lol

 

Has anyone ever used their rack to transport 20' stick of ABS or PVC?

 

I'm not familiar with ABS, but a normal 1/2" or 3/4" stick of PVC at 20' would be pretty flexy.

Maybe set a 10' 2x4 on your rack, center the PVC on top of it so you have 5' hanging off either end, tie it together and then tie it all down to the rack.

 

I'm pretty sure if you tied off 20' lengths of 1/2" or 3/4" plastic pipe on your roof rack, it'll look like these guys thrashing around up there:

lol I work with PVC and all of our work trucks have to be able to carry 20’ sticks of pipe. I’m hoping the GOBI will work for it. We mostly deal with 1”+
