It's time for new tires on my 2022 SR5 and I want beefier looking tires & I'm also considering spacers. It's got a 3" lift & the mud flaps have been removed.

From what I'm reading, I could put on 285's without any issues. What I'd like is some advice on brand of tire (I mostly do highway driving - commuting back and forth to work). I am looking to boost the aesthetics. ... I don't do any off-roading.

I would also like some advice on spacers. I guess a few questions would be , are they a good idea? Is there any impact to mileage/ride/safety? Would 1" spacers make a difference in the stance/look and would they create rubbing issues?

Lastly, thoughts on whether or not to replace the spare tire when I buy 4 new tires.....

(Sorry, no pics ATM, but working on it). Thanks in advance for your input.

Nothing wrong with quality spacers but running 285’s with them you’re most likely going to rub on turns.

From everything I've seen, spacers are likely to cause rubbing because they make the wheel swing in a larger arc when steering.

They DO look cool, but personally I would avoid them.

Check out this video, it's great info on fitting larger tires. All this guy's videos are a must-watch.

For decent highway tires that look aggressive, look at the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT. They're super beefy looking, and I keep hearing good things about them.

    Agreed.

The spacers will increase the scrub radius and you'll most likely rub on the body mount and/or fender.

Falken WPs or MT Baja Boss imo

i have 2” lift and no spacers on my 2022 running 285/70/17 with all mudflaps in place and no rubbing.

same set up on my 2011 SR5 and no rubbing.

    spacer may induce more rubbing

Another vote for the Baja Boss. Have had them for about 6 months. They're fantastic.

I have ~2" lift and 1.25" Spidertrax spacers. I knew I would have serious rubbing with 285's, so I went with stock size offroad tires and am happy with the wider stance and look (and I was able to fix all rubbing on the 265's due to the spacers with mud flap mods and trimming the front bumper cover a bit). The 285's are not significantly taller than 265's, and I prioritized going wider vs. going taller.

No problem! His videos answer so many questions about lifting these.

I'll add that for tires, check out the specs and be conscious of tire weight. The heavier to tire, the greater the negative effect on performance. MPG, Acceleration, and Braking all suffer as tire weight and diameter increase.

I would look at a milder All Terrain like a BFG Trail Terrain or the new Nitto Terra Grappler G3, and definitely stick with an SL or P rated tire ( Standard Load or Passenger). The heavier duty load ranges will be heavier and likely ride harsher.

I'd spend some time reading Tire Rack reviews and tests, they're very informative.

If you are dead set on 285’s the Mickey’s are SL and only 4 lbs heavier than the 265’s.

I guess I thought I needed 285's to fill the space from the lift I put on it. I assumed they would be taller than the 265's that came stock?

For looking tough, the General Grabber ATx is a great tire, looks awesome, rides awesome, does excellent in heat and rain, snow and ice, dont have to be rebalanced all the time and lasts forever. I can tell you, these tires with the tread pattern running to the edge of the carcas, and side biters look MUCH tougher and WIDER than the same size BFG. My friend has the same size tires i do, he has the BFG AT and i have the General Grabber ATX, both the same size and mine look WAY wider than his and WAY tougher than his.

The General Grabber ATX comes in a 265/70-17 = 31.6
The General Grabber ATX comes in a 275/70-17 = 32.2
The General Grabber ATX comes in a 285/70-17 = 32.7

Good shot of both sizes!! Since I ran in the past with my 4runner Pro and SCS wheels because of the more aggressive offset on the SCS wheel you get a better fit and look if you do run the 265’s even if you are lifted a little.

This is just preference but I'm not a big fan of spacers :boom:. Just play with Wheel Offset instead. Spacers are safe if "installed" correctly, but that's where things can get a little iffy at times. Good luck.

    "Need" is a funny word.

No, you don't "need" them. But, they definitely look better than stock size on a lifted 4Runner.

Yes, they're a little taller and wider than stock, as shown in the post from @TrailSpecial22

I have the 285s on my daily 4Runner, i have the 305s on my wifes daily 4runner, and the 275s on my "other" Tundra pickup.
I love these tires, my daily has about 125,000 on a set right now and they just wont wear out. They ride great and do GREAT in the rain even worn down.

That's a beauty! Is that a custom paint job? I could not find a bright red 4Runner, when I bought mine, or I would have gotten that.
