Does the TRD Pro have worse MPG than ORP?

Hey there
I owned a 2019 ORP since new and recently upgraded to a new 2024 TRD Pro.

On my ORP I averaged 18.5mpg. Now with about 2000 miles on my TRD Pro I am averaging about 16mpg.

how is your experience? Does Pro have worse mpg than ORP? And if so why? Weight, tires, roof rack wind resistance or something else? Theoretically they should have identical drivetrains.

Most likely roof rack and tires (if you used OEM on your ORP) assuming you drive the same way.

I average 18-19mpg overall and will do 20ish mpg when I cruise on the freeway at 73mph (as long as it's flat). My pro still has stock nittos but I replaced the pro rack with a gobi stealth

 

New vehicle break in but also pro bro.

 

Man I have a SR5 with all sortsa fixens and I only get 15 at best. lol

 

You already know why in your comments. Weight, tires, roof rack wind resistance and it being new and breaking in. But are you calculating mileage or just assuming the computer is telling you the truth in both cases. I have a 2019 (Would never trade for something newer) and the actual MPG is slightly less than the CPU suggests.

 

I’m calculating it by keeping track of miles driven and gallons filled. Those are some theories but just wondering if anyone knows specifically what of those things it is. Curb weights seem the same from what I can tell so really just looking for some opinions

 

AT tires, 1” front lift, and roof rack. That’ll knock some mpg off at highway speeds. Around town it should be similar.

 

I’d imagine a negligible amount.

 

My Limited always netted better MPGs than either of my Pros.

 

Same experience with me. Not sure if it's because the roof rack or may be the TRD exhaust? Not sure.

 

The tires on our 4Runners have a huge impact on our MPG's. The Limited's do well because they have "Street" tires. My truck came with street tires (Bridgeston Dueller's), but I swapped them out immediately. I'm sure that if I didn't, I'd be getting 22 - 24mpg on a regular basis.

I'm averaging 20.3 - 21.1 mpg for the tank average. That's on super heavy Falken Wildpeaks. Sure, there are other factors like weather (a head wind kills mpg's), elevation, the way you drive, weight of the tires, weight of the truck/accessories, etc...

Definitely. I got over 21 mpg on the Bridgestone Dueler's and had them on for over a year. Huge difference in street tires vs off road. Now i'm lucky to get 18mpg.

 

You won't like hearing this, this morning I got 23.8MPG. Now, that was on a flat road, doing 50MPG (with the cruise set) and it was 11 miles away. I wasn't even trying to get great gas mileage. It just happened.

I've done that same trip in the past, and a strong head wind hit me, it knocked the MPG's down to 18MPG. My 4Runner doesn't like hills either, and come to think of it, neither did my Tacoma. Thank God I live in flat-land country!

 

Haha yeah these engines hate hills but I have long since made my peace with it. My main observation is that the mpg dropped between ORP and Pro with the same driving habits and living in the same place. As you and others say it’s likely the tires among other things.

 

I'm betting the lower front fascia and body cladding on the TRD Sport and Limiteds help aerodynamics too over the other models - even before we add in the Pro's drawbacks. I would have thought that full-time 4WD would have knocked a teensy bit off MPG too though but I guess not much.

 

I think GX460 been low to the ground is helping mpg despite the 4.6 V8.

Now I want to see a madman build and stick on a DIY air-dam - for science!

I'd expect something like half-a-MPG improvement cruising if anything. Maybe enough for a burrito at the end if you're crossing the country. (Easier to slow down though)

Haha I know for a fact that it’s not the pro exhaust because I removed it the week I got it.

 

I used to have 2021 ORP but now have a 2024 PRO, I am still on my dealers fuel tank and ave only 15.2mpg, I was getting more on my ORP, hope it will get better as the car breaks in

 

I lost 1.5mpg just going from OEM tires to Michelin Defender MS2’s. Not even an AT tire.

2024 TRD PRO. Only significant mod is BFG AT/KO2 tires in load range E. (LT 265/70R17).
Filled up in Calgary and drove 620 km into southern BC. Took 65 litres to fill again. 10.5 L/km =22.4 mpg. Driving the speed limit (90) in the National Parks and BC helps.
This was earlier today.

 

I have a 24 TRD ORP. There is a big difference between everyday use around town (I work 4 miles from home) and see 15-16 mpg and solid 21mpg on trips with steady 70mph with the radar cruise control on on a trip. This is not a vehicle to buy if you are overly concerned with fuel economy.

 

Bingo. It's all about tradeoffs. Do you want to save money on gas - or have the ability to comfortably drive yourself, three other passengers, and your gear, virtually anywhere in any road conditions? You don't get both.

AE1M: I have a 2023 Limited and I get just about exactly the gas mileage that you report. I work ~7 miles from home. Not city/block to block driving - but a mix of 35mph to 50mph streets/roads with stoplights. During my daily drive to and from work and similar drives to nearby grocery store, restaurants, etc... - I get 15-16mpg. On an interstate/limited access highway, if I keep it under 75mph, I routinely get about 21mpg. Once when coming back from a week's vacation in the mountains, just for shits and giggles, I reset my After Reset fuel economy display as I was going through Idaho Springs on I-70E very early in the morning - very light traffic. I checked it when passing the Pena Blvd. exit in Denver - about 45-50 miles with a lot of elevation drop in about the first half of that - it showed about 24.5MPG. Earlier in the week, westbound on the way into the mountains, I probably got 12-13MPG over that same stretch. I think the Limited's lower front bumper, the air deflector tucked under it, and the skinnier, stiffer walled street tires make up for the extra weight and full time 4WD.

 

You purchased the wrong truck if you want good gas mileage. My wife has a Rav4 Hybrid that gets 40+ mpg's, she always wants to take it on road trips, it's a Limited 21, so it's nice, but not as much fun as my Pro. She always wants to check my mpg's, so I hypermile a lot when she does, I usually get 21 to 22 when I do.

 

I save fuel by not stopping at stop signs.

Keeping the speed below 70 helps, too.
