Hello everyone. I am a first time 4Runner owner and am very excited to be apart of the community!

This past weekend I had an incident. While driving downhill at about 40mph the vehicle would not upshift and was climbing to about 2200 rpm. So I flipped the gear selector into sport mode and tried to upshift so I could more easily coast down the hill. BUT I ACCIDENTALLY DOWNSHIFTED. My previous vehicle you had to pull the selector down to upshift and I mistakingly downshifted while going downhill. The car violently jolted forward and the rpm’s shot up to about 4500-5000rpm (did not redline) for about 2 seconds before I quickly upshifted.

Did I cause damage to my 4Runner’s transmission or engine? Do I need to take it in to get looked at? Has anyone else done this before? Thanks in advance for your help!

You can't money shift it. It won't shift into a gear that cause a mechanical overrev.

    It’s fine.

Money shifts damage manuals because it's a mechanical connection. With an automatic, the torque converter is a fluid interface and that will absorb most of the shock energy.

First 2200 rpms is fine going down hill, 2nd 4500-5000 isn’t going to kill it either, but I wouldn’t run it there often. 3rd-as I assume was shown in the video, it beeps at you and doesn’t allow you to down shift too much, or at least my 22 off road premium does.
