Ram Saw over 10K Orders for Hemi 1500 Trucks in the First 24 Hours. In US, people just don't want these 4-cylinder turbo engines and are lining up for V8s. The new 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty also helps.

I think Toyota is on the wrong side of consumer demand with trucks and SUVs. Toyota hybrids are wonderful, but should have stayed in Prius and the like. People who want such power train are not buying trucks and SUVs.

Oh hell yeah. Toyota had a great 5.7 v8. They should of r & d that instead of the 3.5.

Ram sells something like 300,000-400,000 pickups annually across their lineup, I don’t think that’s a very big number especially if they’re refundable/non-binding orders.

I like modern rams and actually like the inline 6 they offer but yeah nothing beats the V8 sound and it’s less complicated despite having DOD.

How is the realibility on these things? Anyone has first hand ownership experience on one of these?

My good friend owns one, +30K miles just did his 3rd oil change (10k interval)…interesting thing about some of the tech installed is an oil quality sensor that somehow determines what oil life remains.

He occasionally tows a +7K dual axle with it up in the mountains and can pass cars with not much trouble. As he puts it, the only complaint “is my fuel tank” . He did show me what that truck is capable of (by the way he runs 285/70 R18 Toyo ATIIIs) this past winter which is another reason why I’ll be switching over to those tires.

That truck is definitely something Toyota needs to consider as a role model should they really want to take the Tundra to the next level.

5.7L Crew Cab. Thing rides really sweet on air suspension.

The V6 version is a POS.

While there are lots of people who love their V-8's, there will be a group that will be willing to try the 6th Gen. combo, not necessarily Toyota, but 4cyl./turbos period. The other thing about the Hemi is the new warranty. The Hemi is expensive to produce, and they have had some problems in the past, the powertrain warranty is great, and very appealing to the masses. Hopefully the hemi sticks around, I for 1 would like a Hemi without auto start/stop technology, a Rebel to be exact!

Auto start-stop tech is going away, at least in US. EPA was forced to repeal additional fuel economy credits for having it, so there is no more incentives to force it down everyone's throats.

For the 1500s the 'e-torq' versions have auto start/stop. My friend's 1500 Hemi has a button to disable it.

Too bad about the 10,000 mile oil change interval-it has ruined many fine machines.
I would not trust an electronic gizmo to monitor oil serviciability. Sealed tranny's are bad enough, to also include modern engine oil systems is asking for trouble.
Hopefully vehicle owners can do what suits their preferences.

Oil quality "sensors" is just computer estimation based on load and RPMs and not actual oil sensor doing oil analysis/monitoing. While useful approximation, it could not account for outside factors, such as driving through lots of dust or fording or cold starts below freezing.

However, with 100K/10 year warranty it is very tempting to just follow (what I see as unreasonable) recommendation.

I am wondering if we get a couple of policies and mandates reversed on all of this BS on fuel efficiency and environmental regs, we might see a surge of large engines coming back again. There is definitely a good chunk of the population asking for these beauties. :mudding:

I've written at length before but I would say you can expect things to stay still and not revert much in the medium-term, maybe some powertrains will stick around longer than anticipated or future iterations delayed.

Of course I could be wrong but products are planned years in advance and the rest of the world will continue plodding along with their own emissions standards and these companies genuinely can't predict what the regulatory environment will look like in a couple-to-several years.

If it's something that will be relatively easy, maybe.

Otherwise it's going to be complicated to revise a plan/platform/design, etc. to acquire/build/fit an engine you weren't originally planning for. That costs money companies would probably want to hang onto with an uncertain future.

(Obviously conditions vary and it's been decades since but see the lengths taken to cram the V8 into the AMG Hammer - it's obviously not a truck, but it still wasn't a mass-market economy vehicle)

I think your analysis missing ability to revert back to true and tried. Take 1GR-FE, updated with Toyota direct+port injection would make a very compelling engine in 2025. For performance applications, like Lexus LC, you might start seeing supercharged V8 coming back. None of these engine options would be feasible under previous EPA regime that was designed to soft-ban ICE engine and push EVs and hybrids.

Personally, I think we are entering 30s-like era, where people that have will not want to be in your face about it, while most people will experience hard times and will have to learn to go without. As such, flashy cars will be less common, but something understated like V8 Sequoia or V6 Camry with every option will sell well.

6th Gen could have had a place in this with Limited trim, but I don't see demand as long as 4-cylinder is the only option.

Adding dual injection to the 1GR-FE is a huge question mark I doubt any of us could answer if that's feasible without in-depth knowledge on engineering. If it was an surefire winner I'd imagine Toyota would have more bolt-on-upgraded engines.

A solid chunk of new buyers likely care to know about as much as their car as their dishwasher, especially if you go down the economy car ladder.

Some might care about engine noise, etc. but the important things will still be what's in front of them.

Heck, the wet belts in the F-150 5.0 and 2.7, new Trax don't seem to have moved the needle much. (Yes, they're reliable so far and don't seem to blow up like the 1.0 EB, its just an extra few-several thousand dollar expense at 150k miles give or take)

I pretty much am still skeptical a V8 Sequoia or V6 Camry today would be a sales improvement. The third row + cargo area packaging is probably a bigger hurdle to salespeople than the turbo V6 and if the price is comparable (both being upgrades over the base I4 - of course I know that's gone this generation) then I can't see many not going for the hybrid.

Heck, folks are buying three-cylinders today. I know they don't inherently suck if engineered well, but it doesn't seem like it's going to slow down the Rogue that much - which has the double whammy of being a turbo-3 and with that stupid complicated variable compression system.

I've been having my 2019 Ram Rebel since 2019. I bought it with 3 miles on it and it now has 85k on the clock with no issues. I have the 4runner to daily and help slow down all the miles on my ram.

So you would say it's been as realible as your Toyota? There are a lot of these in the used market in every configuration. Instead of a Tundra, this may also work.

I wouldn't say as reliable as my Toyotas because of Toyotas tried and true reputation, but my Ram is built solid.
I traded in my 2015 Tundra in on my Ram Rebel and have nothing but good to say about both trucks.

My daughter's Lotus Evora has a supercharged 3.5 Toyota V-6 in it, goes like hell and has awesome engine sound. I don't look for the engineering dept. to supercharge engines like the V-8 due to the expense and emissions stuff, just a thought.
