All righty...... UPDATE! One of wifey's sisters called and said come on over in a couple hours for a pool party and grilling on the grill, kinda like a July 4th "after party" I guess.

I thought oh brother, here we go.... so I asked wifey if we were driving separately. She said no, you drive. (meaning the T4R) All I said was- "OK."

Bwah-ha ha! On Friday, she had claimed she wasn't riding in the T4R any more!!??? Women.

So I wonder if this is already the end of this particular storm, or if it's going to flare up again. I wonder if I'll be welcome in the RAV4. I guess I'll steer clear of the RAV4 unless / until I'm invited. I'm going to keep mum. Mum's the word. However, I'm the one who always takes care of the RAV4- washes it, vacuums it, refuels it, etc.

Other than that, I want to apologize for creating this subject in the first place. I had no idea it would go so off track. I was just looking for opinions on what to do I guess.

Thanks to everyone, yes, everyone who replied. It is not my intent to upset anyone. I remain proud of our U.S. Armed Forces, past, and present.

I am not expecting to add any further posting here for this topic. Thanks, everyone.

Rick, you should take the stickers off. Even though she seems to have capitulated. Whether you think your wife’s fears are rational or not, she has fears.

They’re only stickers. IMHO your wife should be the priority, and sacrificing the stickers is the more noble and chivalrous thing to do.

I come from the old-school provide-and-protect philosophy of manhood. Removing the stickers from your car to allay her fears doesn’t put you at risk losing your man card. It earns you the oak leaf cluster embellishment.

Thank you for your service. what about family or parents of someone serving? Would you ask them to remove their stickers since they themselves didnt serve? That would be a NO. Unless a person is maliciously using that to falsify who they are or commit a crime to defraud by using those as “credentials”, flying a sticker should not be considered stolen valor. My best friend son who was in the USAF was killed in 2022. I would be proud to fly a USAF sticker on my 4runner. My father was an Army vet and my friend is a Marine. Doesnt mean it would be stolen valor if I flew anyone of those in support of them.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

People seem to have forgotten what the Stolen Valor law is:

In the U.S., the Stolen Valor Act of 2013 makes it a federal offense to falsely claim certain military decorations with the intent to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefits.

So, if you're driving around with say... A Navy Seal sticker on the back windshield, that's okay. A little dumb, but okay. But if you're CLAIMING that you were once a Seal so you can get some kind of discount on a product or to curry favor with someone (like getting out of a ticket) then it's stolen valor.

Hell, even I could get slapped with a Stolen Valor charge. I'm ex-Army, but if I claimed I won the Silver Star or tried to pass myself off as a Delta Force Operator, I'd be in big trouble.

    Exactly.

I didn't serve; Dad did. Navy, Vietnam. Just now starting to open up some about it.
Would I put a Navy sticker on my ride? Yes, I would.
Would I hear someone telling me to remove it because I didn't serve? No frickin' way.

Back on topic: Rick G, I'm glad it seems to have worked out for you.

As a military brat ( I actually broke the chain in my lineage), I get where some could get offended with certain ones that portray you were there. But don't think that was the intent.

Rick, dude you're the one to live with her not us. Us Crack pots on the internet can make our jokes and shit. But is a sticker on your windows the hill you're dying on?

I can see his point. I think calling it "stolen valor" may be a bit overboard but when I, personally, see a particular unit sticker on a vehicle (not a general branch sticker), I tend to think they were in that unit.

Now, is that on me for assuming? Yes. But because of that, I can see where uncle shorty is coming from.

On the other hand, the OP had a perfectly logical and reasonable justification why he chose those units - not because he served, but because he supports those he knows do serve there. I don't fault that in any way.

Misunderstandings are how the fear starts. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Let's all be chill like the jedi

Personally, if it were me, and even my current girlfriend going on finance soon at 3 years, and I plan to marry her, and love her to death.

I’d want her to be the mother of my children. I’m in my 30s, I’ve played the “game” had the hot girl, cheated, the whole 9. But this one I trust 100%.

I, saying all that above about my current relationship, I would double down and put more stickers and more stuff. She married you because of who you are. I get where she’s coming from, but at the end of the day, you’re the man, and it’s your truck.

most likely since it’s all of a sudden, maybe one of her girlfriends got into her ear. I would hold off, be firm but understanding, but hold your ground. Next thing she wants off is the raptor lights

    Well done, indeed!

But… if “who you are” is the guy who doubles down on something she already doesn’t like, what does that say to her about your respect for her? I don’t think I’d play that way. (Spoken from an old-man point of view….)

I think all this stolen valor business is significant, but it’s beside the point. Mrs. G says she’s afraid of drawing the wrong kind of attention. Vandalism or worse. In the stupid town where I live folks are having their Teslas keyed or other sme such. I don’t know what the climate is in @Rick G. ’s neck of the woods, and who knows to what extent her fears have been amplified by what she’s read on the internet, but it’s not as if the Mrs. is totally off base with her worry.

I'm retired USAF. I see nothing wrong with your stickers. I do not have any stickers on my 4R, but I do have "retired USAF" license plates on my three motorcycles, solely for getting out of speeding tickets if needed. I been pulled over twice in the Smoky Mountains on back roads over the past 10 years and my tactics work!

If im correct @Rick G. Lives in Cedar Park which is right outside of Austin ( that should tell you what you need to know about the climate). My wife and I grew up in ATX but left a little over a decade ago because it was no longer resembled the place we loved as kids and into our 30's.

@Rick G. If I recall there was an incident with a stolen catalytic converter a few cars over from you a few days ago. I believe you even mentioned you were surprised the police showed up. Perhaps that (and an episode of True Crime) got the Mrs thinking it would be better to not be a target. I agree your decals shouldn't have a political bend to them but we are not talking about the most educated or brightest bulbs in the box who would see them as such. Net is, it's your job to make her feel safe so my vote is lose the stickers and make her happy.

Agree with previous poster. Not a hill I'd be willing to die on.

Agreed! I'm outside of Houston, and love my 2nd amendment! Of course, partner and i had this very discussion about a year ago, with my MOLON LABE sticker on my 4runner.

It is a good point... People have just gone over the top, and the stoopid spectrum is off the charts lately. Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned, but I removed it because it was a good point made.

The phrase "choose your battles" comes to mind with this. For me, it was just a sticker... no harm no foul!

    Cheers,

    Sean

@Rick G. Love the Case IH sticker. My dad used to sell for them! Ran all over the Rockies selling to the small dealers back in the late 70s and had a brief stint in Racine.

I live not too far in Leander/Georgetown area, and yes it's changed massively over the 20 years i've been in this area (SA and MANY other places before that). But I don't see the harmful attention, but I don't like decals or stickers. I even take off badges when I can. I can definitely attest to the lack of authoritative attention when needed.

Just take them off & put some new ones on down the road. Gotta compromise a little to live with women. Tell her she can take them off if it bugs her so much
