    Just sharing

    based off my pcv valve post that for some reason caused so much “outrage” over an $11 part. Here is my preamble. I’m not saying you must do this or you should do this or anything else. I’m simply showing you an easy mod that can save you a lot of money. So @Turd Ferguson before you feel obligated to tell everyone how you have a million miles on your 4R with only 10k oil changes. Please just sit this one out.

    I guess the sponge filter can get sucked into the pump. Not only can it cause a CEL and a costly repair since they have to replace the entire pump. Here is a quick and easy modification you can do. I did it and it’s very easy.

    So funny. I know he is dying to respond and tell us how great his 4R and Tacoma are.

    We already knew about this one though. Foam filters have been found missing.

    Now might be the perfect time to remove emissions equipment from vehicles. I read that that current administration is rolling back clean energy and increasing coal fired energy.

    Please tell us again how all you do is 10k oil changes and your awesome story of how you’ve put 250k and never changed the brake fluid. We all love those stories.

    I can’t because that would be a lie. I always do 5K oil changes on the taco and did the brake fluid at 200K. 7.5K oil changes in the 4Runner. If you hate me so much then why did you tag me in this thread? I wouldn’t even have noticed it or cared.

    Oil changes?
    Brake fluid changes?
    What?
    My 260,000 mile 4R has the stock trans fluid, stock power steering fluid, stock rear diff fluid, and stock brake fluid.
    You guys change fluids? My vehicles just keep running cause Toyota used the best stuff the first time.

    I had to apply the Hewitt Tech modification, due to monetary purposes, on one of my other Toyotas due to the filter deterioration and damage caused.

    I think you all know what I would do with this filter. Nothing. I don’t listen to YouTubers solutions to problems that don’t exist.

    The uni filter merely delays the problem. The pump and switching valves will begin to fail after 8 years or so anyway, as the parts are exposed to hot exhaust gases. The Hewitt kit is in principle similar to doing EGR delete on earlier vehicles.

    Not a new mod. I believe it stems from Tacoma's where the issue was more prevalent and the idea seemed to catch on with 4R owners. But have not heard of this issue in my 10+ yrs of 5th gen ownership and being on the forums for same amount of time.

    Not saying this mod is necessary but I see it as good, simple, preventative mod. Saying that, I did this because it was simple and easy and thought it wouldn't hurt to do. If anything adds a layer of prevention.

    Discussed at length here as well;

    After it sucks the foam filter into the system and you have to bring it in.

    Then they say, you should have checked this like others do in the t4r.org and 4Runners.com websites before now.

    LOL

    @UncleShorty ,
    Well after ribbing you, I decided to check mine!
    Well the original foam was still in place, but since I had the UNI Filter in my cabinet, I did the 5 minute install. Mileage just under 65K.

    Here's the UNI Filter I use on my taco.

    https://a.co/d/9DNh96N

    I would recommend that if anyone does the UNI Filter Mod on their 4runner to make sure they clean the UNI filter every year or so. Don't throw away the old gray factory one. I have not done this mod on my 2015 4runner but I did do it on my 2013 taco. 2012 tacos notoriously have this problem & the mod stems from that. There was a change in 2013 but I didn't risk it.

    I'd also like to add that my taco does pass Colorado (Denver Emissions really) Emissions with the UNI mod.

    I did put the shroud back on. I left it off for a bit but it got dirty a lot faster. Again, keep the small gray foam filter. If something goes wrong or you get a p2441 code or whatever, your gonna want to put that foam filter back in before the dealer sees its not there --- if its still under warranty, etc.

    Yep, "on-condition maintenance" as they say on the airline world.

    In parts of the industry I was in, it’s called “Run to Fail”, that always causes a larger issue with downtime and production loss.
    I never agreed with that procedure.
    Best practices at the facility where I worked, we ran “Predictive/Prevetative Maintenance”

    Thats pretty much what we are doing with our T4R’s, inspecting items and changing before they cause failure that will cost more.
