It looks like the only dirt is in the pre-filter. I checked the pleats and they are clean. Would you replace?

    Oooh look, another mod.....

You must not live in a dusty state or a state with a lot of pollen in the air. If you have sensitivity to allergies, I'd change it. But if you don't, wait until 20k miles and check it again. 20k was when I replaced my engine air filter and my cabin filter. They were pretty dirty by 20k.

Replace every 12 months, once a year irrespective of the condition.
Unless you cover 5000 miles a year on city roads.

I’d keep the thick boy, sometimes the dealer will give you the skinny one. I stocked up and bought like 12 thick boys with the pre mesh. Got them sealed in a bag in my garage lol

Give that sucker a nice sponge bath and then dry it out in the sun

Jk dont but yes every 15k is just standard.. it's like 1 dollar per thousand miles for maintenance costs

Take a shop vac to it. I keep two filters, one for streets and one for offroad.

I’d run it. I think the manual calls for 30K miles maybe more even under extreme environments.

Edit: I thought it was a cabin filter for whatever reason, I’d run it.

15K is my minimum usually, I’d wait longer.

Ha! I thought he was talking about his cabin filter, not his engine. Good catch.

I’d keep it a while longer, especially since it’s unlikely you’ll ever find such a nice filter again. Dealers around here only sell the thin version with no pre-filter.

Wix makes thick filters with pre-filters, but they don’t have as many pleats as the original one that comes from the factory in Japan.

I’m betting every Toyota technical with mounted AA guns in the back is still running around the saharan desert with this exact filter since it left the factory.

Each time someone says the thick filters are no more, I go buy a couple :D

Looks exactly like mine -- I pulled it last weekend at 14k miles... and put it right back into service. I put the new one back on the shelf...

Whereabouts do you live? Do you get them at your dealer? I’ve heard of some scoring original filters from online parts dealers, but mine tells me that “toyota doesn’t make them anymore”. Which is what they say anytime the dealer chooses not to stock a particular part (like wiper inserts).
