I bought some knock offs on Amazon that were advertised as OEM and they wouldn't stay torqued. I could damn near loosen the drain plug by hand when I went to change the oil.
Purchased some off Ebay through a dealership and have had no problems since.

If effort was put into a counterfeit it’s hard to tell. Amazon makes it more difficult to tell who you’re truly buying from too between inventory commingling and de-emphasizing the seller’s name so I rather not mess with it other than cheap trinkets.

That said, I got gaskets included with my filters when I bought them at the dealer, yours might be up for tossing them in too.

Half the items on Amazon auto parts are knock offs now. It is a roll of the dice on and vehicle manufacturer/OEM parts or high priced sensors from denso, bosch etc. Same on ebay. Basically if it is a non dealer selling the items you are looking for issues, but also likely not getting a better price.

Metro 24 Wholesale would be a big no for me to buy from. Check their reviews and see if anyone has complained of the parts before.

I suspect they are equally shitty and stick to the oil pan. Use something better: https://www.4runners.com/posts/639278

Good question, I placed the order on Amazon first, but it was showing to arrive on Dec 9. I figured I may need to do the oil change earlier and dealer are having sales, so I picked up another 10. The amazon ones arrived early, hence the comparison. The dealer ones are actually cheaper with the sales.

Amazon has a lot of shady 3rd party sellers. You can see who the seller is (look under the buy it now button). Even if it says “ships from Amazon”, look who it’s sold by. 3rd party sellers can ship to Amazon warehouses and have Amazon ship their items.

I’ve been burned by non-OEM parts that are advertised as OEM before on Amazon, sold by 3rd party. I bought an O2 sensor for my other car and it was significantly different and only worked for 1 month.

Also have to watch out for fake non-car items too. Including books.

Most probably it is fake, just like pretty much everything else on Amazon. Fake or used.
To be absolutely safe, it's always better to get them directly from the dealer online or in store.

So glad I ran across this group!

I just changed the oil in my '03 4Runner and the drain bolt was NOT tight at all. Freaked me out because I've never experienced that before. I use the real Toyota crush washers that are blue on both sides and always tighten the bolt properly. You can feel the washer crushing as you tighten it. Also, the blue plastic coating came off on the bolt, and the drain pan. I've had two '03 4Runners - I've driven over 250,000 miles combined and never experienced this before. I bought a pack of 10 on Amazon and the label looks like real Toyota, but after reading these comments, I'm convinced they are counterfeit. I never would've thought there'd be such a thing as counterfeit Toyota drain plug gaskets, but there is definitely something not right about these. I bought a pair of O2 sensors on Amazon a few years ago, and they lasted maybe a year. I replaced them with Duralast sensors, and no problems. Thanks for the info people! I'm not buying auto parts on Amazon anymore!

I checked the ones I bought on Amazon, and they are counterfeit. Looks like a real Toyota label on the package, but I checked out the washers with a magnifying glass and they look like the fake one on the photo.

I also bought counterfit oil plug drain washers from an big auto parts store. First one I used did not seat properly ie did not "crush".
So I buy all my Toyota gaskets at local dealer (outrageous prices).

For the love of god stop buying car parts off Amazon! If you order car parts from Amazon, you're asking for it :computercoffee:

I will buy parts from Toyota dealers on Amazon, like oil filters. Usually, I wait for the 25% off sale and free shipping that happens a couple of times a year from Toyota. And I have never had a factory Toyota drain plug gasket not stick to the pan.

This reminds me why i dont buy any car parts from Amazon. Too many counterfeits. I read that they are even counterfeiting oil filters. I get my stuff from rock auto or the dealership. Done with Amazon

I am so glad you mentioned your experience. I am having the same issue, i can literally undue the drain plug by hand. I knew it had something to do with the gaskets but wasnt 100% sure. Now I am 100% sure that is my problem

I personally don't trust anyone but the dealership anymore. Never thought I would say that but if we start getting counterfeits from the dealer, then it's all over.

It's not as if Toyota is the only source for quality oil drain plug washers. See post #16.
