Alright, let's be honest; who here is considering a 6th gen?

Definitely considering one but with time.

 

I've modernized my 2015 4Runner Trail Premium so not planning on upgrading anytime soon. I'm not a hardcore off roader and honestly I'm more tempted by the Honda Passport Transport Elite as time goes on. V6 engine, 10 speed automatic, nicer interior, etc...Also the reviews are extremely positive.

Yeah, I'd rather daily this than a 4R. It's a shame the mileage isn't a little better though.

I saw one in person recently and the interior looks so much nicer than the 6G.

 

They look pretty nice and are about $10K less than a new 4Runner.

 

Yeah that seems like a heck of a vehicle and I love the V6. I think that V6 is the same one used in Ridgeline, Pilot, Odyssey and now Passport.

When they punched the engine the sound so much more traditional and no where near as “whiney” as the turbo 4 cylinder. The grunt of the V6 makes the 4 cylinder sound like a child’s toy. I also noticed where Andrea commented that at the moment they think the V6 naturally aspirated is more for longevity and towing as well.

I agree with the push button trans though that seems gimicky. Even though they all are electronic shifts I still prefer an old school gear lever

 

This definitely seems like a good alternative for folks who don't really do any serious off-roading. I'm honestly not even sure why people are cross shopping the two. If I wasn't going to off-road, I'd be in a Highlander or RX.

I assume by "grunt" you're referring to the sound. The turbo 4 makes way more usable torque than that little V6.

I'm not sure who Andrea is, but, if towing is a consideration, the 4Runner is going to perform better than the Honda.

I doubt many 4Runner owners do ANY towing at all, and of those who do tow it appears >70% of them live near thatbassguy in SE Wisconsin.

Maybe look around the forum beyond the 6th gen sub forum and you will see that some people actually tow with 4Runners.

Heck, it seems every couple days I see a semi-“novel” tow vehicle.

Saw an Ascent towing something that seemed way too large for its capacity the other day.

Today was a first-gen Traverse with a U-Haul box trailer.

For how much less the trailer rental costs compared to the box truck, I bet folks are willing to try.

 

My Dad used to tow a fishing boat with a Corolla, loaded with camping gear and 3 kids.

I don't get the mentality that folks need a full size truck for towing. Many midsize SUV's and crossovers tow just fine for the average person's needs.

Sure, if you want to haul a 10,000# 5th wheel, you'll need a full size truck. But, for towing a small travel trailer, or fishing boat a few times a year, a 4Runner is fine.

Edit: between this car, and his '94 4Runner, which he sold to me around 2002, my Dad is probably the biggest reason I got into Toyotas.

Funny; my Grandpa was a Ford man. I believe he gave my dad some grief about buying a Toyota.

I believe you're correct. Back in the 70's and 80's, they were probably viewed as Hyundai and Kia were in the 90's and 2000's.

 

My Dad just turned 90 and still gives me grief for buying Toyotas. He has usually driven a Ford product and now a Chrysler mini-van. Lol

 

Before getting my 6G I drove a 23 Honda Ridgeline. The Ridgeline got totaled by an 81 year old running a stop sign so I looked at the 26 Passport and the 4R. Money wise the Passport is a better deal, but honestly the V6 in the Honda was a major let down compared to the 6G's 4 cyl. If your rev the crap out of the V6 its not bad but the increased torque and where it comes on makes the 6G way better in my opinion. Also the push button transmission is just weird, I never liked it but lived with it. Also the dash of the Honda sucks, at least to me, I prefer round gauges even if they are digitally formed.

 

Same. I’ve spied a couple of 6th gen in the wild and I’ve sat in a new Tacoma to get a feel for the new interior. I had my 2024 in for its first oil change a few weeks ago, while I was waiting I asked to see one of the 6th gen 4Runners on the lot. The sales guy literally laughed at me and explained that they are selling sight unseen at MSRP + markup. They wouldn’t even open the door to let me see the sold units on the lot. I guess that’s a lot like what happened when the new gen Tacoma came out, but now there are hundreds of them in stock. I’m happy to let the new model madness pass and take a look again in a few years.

 

Either that salesman was full of shit, or there are a lot of stupid people out there. They are already being advertised with discounts in southeastern Wisconsin.

Either way, not a bad idea to wait a couple of years to let them work out any new model bugs.

 

This was in Phoenix, AZ at one of the larger Toyota dealers where I’ve purchased 3 times in the past and had good experiences. Timing wise, it was about a month ago, perhaps the market has shifted already. Or perhaps the young sales guy (I have concert t-shirts much older than him, I’m sure) didn’t want to break a sweat since I was clearly just curious and not looking to Buy It Now.

For the money a Land Cruiser costs you’d be better off in a GX550
The 550 premium is WELL equipped and cheaper than most Land Cruisers except the base model cloth seats. The fanciest 550 with painted and color matched everything and fancy stereo and fancy leather is only $5,000 more than the top or the line land cruiser which is a cheaply built vehicle in my opinion.

 

I agree but want the gx550 overtrail and price goes north of lc. Waiting to see how the new turbo motor does for several years.

I have seen a couple lifted and they are sharp.

 

I love our LX600, if we replace the 4runner I would definitely go witha GX.
