Better Camera Recommendations 2024

This is correct, i too have kept hoping Toyota would come out with a simple reflash to fix the camera quality. I waited as long as i could, the wife was on my ace about it too much so i had to try to fix it. Thread below with pix and all.

Upgrading to a 10.1 HD head unit helped in my case, but to also upgrade the camera to HD was just unnecessary. I still use my windows.

 

any updates? I am hoping for a programming fix to give the rear camera better resolution and remove the weird gray area from front cam

 

I havent heard anything yet. Definitely would be appreciated to have a more useable backup camera

I have exactly same issue. Really unacceptable grainy foggy image quality despite cleaning the lens. I don't think it's supposed to be that bad. I took mine to dealer and they ordered a replacement camera since the car was still under warranty. Your car should also be under warranty so I suggest telling dealer to order a new one. Another thing is I see no dynamic grid lines when I turn my steering wheel. Not sure whether it's supposed to be there but all I see is the blue box line and red line that goes throught the middle that are fixed and not turn with steering wheel. Hope that'll get fixed too when they install new camera.

Meanwhile I ordered Auto-Vox wireless solar powered backup camera from Amazon. Will see how that goes but looks promising. You can check it out. A lot of video reviews on it. The fact that Japan is the country of Nikons and Canons known for superb image quality this substandard camera on 4Runner is very disappointing.

 

Its not the camera, its the software and "tuning"

 

I switched to a setup from www.insta360.com last year and it's been solid so far, especially for wide-angle shots and low-light areas. Mounting was super simple and the app makes grabbing clips really fast. I’ve also had zero water issues even after tons of rain and mud. Might be worth checking out if you’re after something small but packed with features.

 

Turning blue waiting for a firmware update on this, have any lives been lost yet? Toyota, Fix this totally inept camera system before someone gets hurt, we can't see, it doesn't work! How can you let this go on, we are embarrassed for you!

 

I was curious if they didn't upgrade this in 2021 because of the semiconductor "chip" shortage. They just held out for the new model... No clue just conjecture on that.

If a drop in camera upgrade became available for the front and rear I'd buy it in a hurry. I have 360 cameras and they're helpful during the day in a parking lot...
At night they are nearly unusable. off road they are somewhat usable but the lack of clarity makes it difficult.

I mainly use them for parking during the day or when I come over a crest off road and don't know which way the trail goes

 

In a parking lot with lines they are usable
In gravel they are useless
At night they are practically useless unless the lines are clear and distinguishable
They are absolutely terrible there is no way around it. I had to install a new camera to fix the issue. Using an HD camera gave me a usable picture. Bad thing is the non 360 camera systems are just fine. It’s only us who got the fancy system that had the terrible view

 

I have an SR5 Premium (non 360), and my camera sucks too.

 

I can assure you, its better than the guys with the 360 camera system

That HD camera is a definite improvement, but if I'm going to change it I want a front and rear that reflects current technology and clarity. I'm sure that would mean a new head unit and 2 good cameras + ditching the mirror cams, prolly $1500ish?

 

The new Dasatia that looks identical to the new 2020+ radio is an HD screen and if you swapped out for HD cameras you could likely have amazing front and rear view.
