Was filling up. After awhile noticed fuel overflowing the spout. Fuel is now topped off at the furthest ring shown here. This never happened before. Is this going to be an issue? Am I going to be leaking fuel out of the cap?

I doubt this will be an issue, fuel will just evaporate or drop out quickly. You might want to inspect this whole funnel thing and make sure it doesn't have any holes or leaks around. If you do, then go ahead and replace it. I never seen this before though.

I’m guessing I didn’t get a good seal. Or the pump auto stop wasn’t working?

My concern would be a fuel soaked evap canister.

    ^This.
4runner is notorious for having a very touchy fuel system when over filling. Keep an eye on check engine light.

Thanks for all the quick responses. Drove a bit and the level seems to have dropped out of sight within the funnel. Guess I’ll take the long way home.

The first situation I ever needed to drive around just to burn fuel.

This was really strange so let me know if anyone’s experienced this. Or know what might’ve caused it.
Started fueling up as I normally do. I was at half tank. Did a walk-around inspection. After a bit noticed fuel overflowing out of the spout. Not much collected on the ground so it wasn’t overflowing long. Saw that fuel was sitting right up to the rim. Soaked up as much as I could with paper towels then capped up. Drove 4-5 blocks down to the grocery store. Opened up the cap to check and the fuel had receded out of sight. After picking up some groceries drove a bit until the estimated miles of what gas I had was slightly under what I would normally get after filling up. So what could’ve caused the fuel to sit at rim 5m. or so only to recede out of sight after a few blocks? I know my fuel economy isn’t bad enough to use up a spout full of gas in 4-5 blocks.

When I bought my 4R, the dealership had overfilled the tank. I drove around a couple of hundred miles, and the fuel gauge seemed stuck on full. I was afraid it was broken. Dealership said over filling can cause this issue. It gradually resolved after a couple of careful refills and hundreds of miles.

Sounds like the automatic shut off on the nozzle malfunctioned. Nothing to do with the 4Runner that caused that.
I would inform the station, if it local to you, in the event you have an issue with your charcoal canister.

I had an overfill event at a pump that was going really slowly. I did not think about it being an issue, but it was slow enough to not trigger the shut off. I noticed by hearing the splashes!

no issues after. Was frustrated and realized I should have switched pumps. It was REALLY slow.
I was driving across the country, so just got back on the road and emptied it again. Did not know the 4r could have a problem with that… all my previous rigs were fj40s or similar, so very forgiving and happy to eat fuel fast.

Have overfilled many, many times, busting clouds (like fuel on my chanclas overfilled). I go until pump stops then one click anyway. 9 yrs. old runner/ 216k. No problemo. You'll more than likely be fine.

I have done this a few times at gas stations with old pumps or damaged/bad seal causing it not to stop. Really not a big deal.

Now if you do it often that's a problem for the evap canister.

Old pumps to be proactive with.

Had a similar issue w/ my last Tacoma. It was a pump fault where the auto-shut off didn't work and fuel over flowed. It never caused an issue and I ran it for many thousand more miles before trading in 2018.
I would just not go to that pump or station for a while, but if you tell them what happened they will probably have that pump inspected.
I wouldn't worry about it since one time probably won't affect the evap canister

A few times overfilled should not cause an issue. It’s the topping off continuously that will cause an issue. I know this from experience and had to replace the canister, but that was a different vehicle. One or two clicks past the shutoff will not cause you an issue.
