So I have a 2021 TRD PRO and am in the process of getting a Wescott Designs lift kit installed (just shy of 2") with Mickey Thompson AT Baja Boss tire 285/70/17 (32.71", 11.22" height, 7.85" sidewall).

The shop (mostly a jeep shop) is telling me the spare will not fit in the undermount location. The stock size of tire was a Nitto Grappler 265/70/17 (I originally listed it as 275).

    I have TWO questions:

1.) For anyone here have experience with fitting a 33" in the undermount position, should my new tire fit?

I was not planning on getting a rear bumper to carry a spare, but may have to. The problem with a rear mount bumper and the spare tire hanging in the back, is the possibility that the tire and my trailer tongue box will bump, and limit my turning radius.

2.) Does anyone have experience with trailers with a rear bumper with a spare tire situation that could offer some advice? TIA!

Can’t speak to towing a trailer (yet) with a bumper mounted spare but two things come to mind in order to achieve clearance, perhaps a longer Drawbar and/or Trailer Coupler?

As for tire clearance in the factory location, give this thread a read.

Had zero issues with 285-70-17 KO2s
Nor my new 255-80-17 Dura RTs
Also have KDSS so I think our rear sway is also a concern
Fits with a lil bit of room n even with the 285s…just guide the tire up straight
Your all good in my book

side note: Or….you can still get a rear bumperrrr…just sayin

So as it turns out, even with the tire aired down, the 33" Mickey Thompson tire would not fit due to the hitch receiver.

I am definitely in the market for a rear bumper now!! I need to find a hitch mount spare tire holder as a temporary solution while I shop for a rear bumper.

    Thank you all.

    NO
You need to take a little off your hitch or drill a new hole in the hitch. If the hitch is sticking inward past the back of the receiver its going to contact the tire.
You can mark the hitch tube with a soap stone or marker and pull the hitch out and grind the metal down that sticks inward past the receiver and your tire will clear.
I have 285s on one 4R with a full size spare and 305s on another with a full size spare. BOTH fit and i have posted pix on the other forum of the 305 which is TIGHT'er but it fits. I was measuring for another user once and with a little sheet metal work on the receiver hitch i believe you could stuff a 35 under there.
YOU CAN MAKE A 285/70-17 FIT

Okay I am definitely going to investigate. I read about someone doing that in another thread. As soon as I get my vehicle back from the shop...
    I appreciate you Airdam!

So you were correct! Except it was NOT interfering with my hitch receiver AT ALL. I got it back today (hubby had to pick it up for me) and I got under there and checked myself. It fits. What the hell...
