I did my first oil change on a 2024 4Runner I just bought second hand. It calls for 6.6 quarts of 0w-20 so that’s exactly what I put. But now my dipstick is reading over the top fill line by almost half an inch! I’ve seen others with similar issues in their 5th gen’s. Is this a common problem? Should I even consider it a problem? And why on earth would it call for 6.6 quarts if that’s too much???

You can't get every bit of oil out when you drain it so there is always some left in the engine. Best to refill with less and work slowly up to the full mark. I usually put 6qts in and that does it. Sometimes I have to add a half quart or so. I'll check it again after a couple days to be sure I don't need to add more.

A whole half quart of oil stuck in the engine seems like a lot. Should I drain some oil with the oil filter tool?

If you drained it completely, replaced the filter and then added 6.6 qt, you are good.

Interesting... my 5th gen takes almost 7 quarts to get to the full mark, approx 6.8 quarts.

You are worrying too much. A little extra won't hurt anything IMO. Is not like you dump an extra Qt in there.

200k and 1234567 oil changes sure.
I have never had the oil level exactly at the upper dot on the dipstick. Always over.

Unless you added over half a qt, nothing to do.
And if it is taking your sleep away, remove a few mls from the drain plug.

Okay bro if you say so. Just worried cause the car is practically brand new. This would me a devastating blow if I messed up the engine

^There's language in the owner's manual that says the stated capacity is reference info and the dipstick takes precedence. However, the 1GR's dipstick tube design is asinine, causing a lot of smearing on the dipstick and unreliable readings. That's why I just put in the 6.6 qt and go.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the half inch on the dipstick that Taylor says he’s seeing represents a half quart.

This is one of those things you’re going to get varying opinions on. Do some research and see if you can find an authoritative opinion.

I believe if he has drained completely, replaced with a new filter and added exactly 6.6 qt, the dipstick level is more a general indication rather than exact level.

Since he said he added 6.6 exact that's what went in. Now if he added over 7 qt thinking it's 6.6, then everything changes.

The dipstick has highly unreliable since the 1GR came out. You can scuff up the end of it but it still sucks.

IF you are telling the whole story, then nothing to worry about, little overfill won't matter. However, dipstick tells a different story - 1 inch over top mark is more than a little bit overfill. How did you measure oil that you added? Did you take dipstick reading on the level ground and cold? Did you wipe dipstick before taking your reading?

If you overfill a lot, then what start happening is crank starts hitting oil and whipping it into froth, that has poor lubrication properties and have the same effect as oil starvation if sucked into the oil pickup.

My driveway not level, any time I take dipstick reading in the driveway it is all over place. For each car, I have to learn what is 'driveway' reading that corresponds 'level ground reading'. Even a small incline can make a lot of difference, so make sure your truck is on a level ground before you conclude it is overfilled.

What engine temperature did you sample oil?
    Cold overnight?
Is the wet line a lot over top line. Getting a small amount of oil OUT can be a hassle. Likely you will loosen drain plug and then quickly screw it back after some spills out on your gloved hand. Hopefully cold oil so no burns.

I do exactly what @HuskyMike does, put in 6 qts, drive it around a couple days, recheck the oil level and add a burp or two from a fresh quart if needed. Check again in a couple days. You can always drain a little out using the plastic drain adapter included with your Toyota oil filter. Just remove the center plug on your oil filter housing and push the plastic adapter home. That will drain the oil in the oil filter housing, which may be just enough. You could drain it again if need be after you start the engine and fill the oil filter housing. You’ll be fine either way.

If you didn’t start the engine yet, the oil filter hasn’t been filled.

You're experiencing oil creep.......as @3JOH22A already alluded to.

Oil loves to creep up these particular dip stick tubes and give you higher readings than you actually have.

Take your dip stick out. Wipe it off and leave it out for 5 minutes to allow the oil in the dip stick tube to settle.

Put the dip stick back in all the way and pull it back out and take your reading.

I always put the exact amount it calls for with oil filter change and call it a day. Just checked the Ford its showing over. But its creeping. The 4R always shows low on the dipstick but I dont add any know its good.IMG_1657.jpg

After I fill the engine with oil, I run the engine to check for leaks and then usually a zoom down the highway and then sit for at least an hour . Then, I check the dipstick. I have never had to add oil after putting in approx 6.4 to 6.6 quarts in.
