You're 100% correct, there is no mileage they recommend it changed. By the time the light goes on the damage is done. I follow a toyota mechanic and he recommends it changed at 90k. He did his in a video and yes it was still "functioning" but you could hear the ball wasnt moving as freely as it should have.

My previous DD was a Volvo with the 2.5T (5cyl turbo). Great motor, I love the way wit drives. TQ peak at 1800 rpm, it's like a diesel.

The Achilles heel of that motor is the PCV system. It's not just the valve, there's a bunch of tubing under the intake. Parts are fairly cheap, but it's labor intensive and fairly expensive. Neglect it too long, and all kinds of problems pop up. I was guilty of that on mine once it reached beater status. Pretty sure it blew some seals out because the thing started leaking oil like a seive just before I took it off the road.

I will say it was great for 233k miles. Zero turbo issues.

I don’t see any affiliate links or signs of editing anywhere, I’m blanking but I’m pretty sure this site sometimes adds a link to keywords automatically like when I talk about eBay - but I could be getting mixed up with another forum.

    Edit: Yep, there it is.

Anyways, tackling the PCV helped reduce oil consumption in my specific situation with my last car at around 100k or so. I’ll probably do it earlier this time.

Two different cleaners for sure, the base of brake cleaner is tetrachloroethylene and dichloromethane. Many electrical contact cleaners are made with N-Propyl Bromide, Trichloroethylene, and Perchloroethylene (I used to be a dry cleaner). Methly Ethyl Nasty Shit for sure.

I don't know about regularly replacing it, but cleaning it may be a better option. A quick blast of throttle body cleaner will take care of any build up inside of it.

Nah. If I’m taking out an 11 part I’m replacing it. If I do it every 80k miles, I’m going to replace it.

If it was something that failed or wore out regularly wouldn’t you think that Toyota and especially the dealers would be pushing to have this be part of scheduled maintenance? It’s easy money for the dealers.

It will still "rattle" and be bad. I think the O' ring just swells and it wont let the gases pass. Anyone add an oil catch-can?

Its kind of ironic that those that don't want to replace it at 50-80k are most likely the ones that do 10k mile oil changes. No issue with that, the manual says it's fine. However, it's those engines that have the higher risk of a pcv getting clogged up and causing other issues.

Honestly, $11 is well spent in my opinion. I didn't realize the pcv is a (30-60k) maintenance item on my daughter's Honda Accord. Now I'm looking for the time to replace her valve cover gasket. I expect the job to take about 4 hours not to mention exactly $100.00 for the new pcv and gasket. That a few meals vs a portion of 1.

For $11, 1 hose clip, and one "bolt" (the pcv itself), I see this as peace of mind that I am lowering the risk of a nasty oily mess on my engine and maybe even garage floor not to mention the potential of a bigger job to remedy my own personal negligence. Let face it, we are on this forum because we are enthusiasts, the sight of oil leaking down an engine is borderline traumatic.

Amen, like you, I learned the importance of changing it because of my Honda Pilot. Fortunately, i was on their Pilot forum site and was told how important it is to do. For the Pilot, they were plastic and notorious for breaking in the head and getting the two bolts out was a magician act on its own. But yeah, a bad pcv causes sludge, leaks, etc. I change my oil every 5k miles. Costs me $50 for an OEM filter and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Not going to break me.

just remember to change it when you do start to have leaks or are stumped why you're burning oil.

Wow. @morfdq is really committed to this thread. We should give him an honorary PCV valve ambassadorship or something.

You're the lady who compared the PCV valve to VVTi filter. I have nothing further to say. Your comment spoke for itself

It's funny.. I haven't even thought about changing a PCV valve in probably 20 years. Seems like it was just normal maintenance back when I drove POS cars.

I don't see anything wrong with replacing, or cleaning it periodically. $11 every 5-10 years is nothing.

What does the Honda Pilot PCV have to do with the one in the 4Runner. Is there any documentation about failures in 4Runners?

Just pulled mine. 70,000 miles delivered July 2019. Lots of shorter drives in the winter. 5,000 mile oil changes.

Ball was as free as the new one.

Just a quick note to anyone changing this. There is a video on Youtube where someone uses red loctite, as they say it was the comparable product to what Toyota recommends on the first few threads.

Do not use RED loctite, Blue 243 is the comparable product.
