I have a loud squealing noise while braking in reverse. I was told this is a known problem with 2014's. I have had my mechanic check it out and said the brakes were fine. Anyone know of this issue and if so, what is the solution?

Yup, common. Unless your pads are touching the wear tabs and assuming everything else is in spec, you just have to live with it.

Because there is no problem. The 4runner brakes make noise on reverse.
Go on, let's hear your solution!

Saying you just have to live with it is like saying, "You have cancer - lots of people have it. There's nothing you can do for treatment. Just live with it."

    Some things for your mechanic:

    1) The primary cause for this brake noise is the vibration from the pads slightly shifting. Permatex grease on the back on the pads is a place to start.
    2) Check the inboard side of the pads for uneven wear, as well as the wear indicator tab potentially dragging. Rear brakes on the 4runner can wear unevenly and the inboard pad can be much thinner/more worn than the outboard. Also, rotor glazing is an additional thing to check.
    3) Check and lube the guide pins on the caliper. Also, there's the opportunity to add an extra retaining spring instead of just the one that's already on there. This has helped. Brake hardware kits are cheap, so you can even consider swapping everything out - especially if you're on the original kit which is now 11 years old.
4)The E-brake adjustment and E-brake shoes can also be a culprit.
    5) Lastly, new brake pads. How old are your existing pads? I was starting to get brake squeal in reverse recently before I replaced the pads (I use Akebono ASPs front and rear). My rear pads were unevenly worn (like I mentioned above) and while there was still meat on them (much less so on the inboard pad), it was easy and not overly expensive for me to swap them out. Kept my StopTech rotors, which were still fine and in spec. Guess what? Reverse brake noise gone. Imagine that.

    Hope this helps!

Wow...Thanks so much for the recommendation. I will definitely get the mechanic to look at this!
