got the test kit for a standard analysis and was going to add a TBN test. First time doing it, is there anything else I should add?

    any advice would be appreciated

Personally I would skip doing the analysis.

Usually people would state why. Why do you say skip it

It’s not going to tell you much of anything besides normal wear. As long as regular oil changes are done then there will be nothing abnormal in the results.

Ok. Makes sense. I change in every 5k miles with Penzoil Ultra Platinum and an OEM filter. I’ll save my $60 which is what the test cost.

I mean if you already paid then use it but really it isn’t necessary on anything that isn’t old or expensive.

No. I just got the container to put it in today. Haven’t paid anything yet. I’ll save my $60. You brought up a good point. I change it every 4,500ish miles with good oil.

    I agree with whipper.
Blackstone is so fuckin silly. We use to send our motorcycle oil over a decade ago like it was revolutionary information.

guess what 99.9% of the reports say? Normal. Try extending your oil change interval to x amount or keep the same.

Blackstone is great if you just want to do a general check up or if you expect something is wrong.

I think it is a neat piece of information if you want to baseline the truck at intervals and spot check to see later on. But of course, it is money...money...:spending:and for what really. I was going to set it up at the beginning of my supercharger install and then see over time what the negative impacts could be....but then, I was like, why would I want to worry about it and start creating ideas or problems with the data that might not be so relevant after all. So I decided against it. But I almost did it too. I say buy a six pack of beer and enjoy it instead.

Blackstone is very useful in diagnosing a problem or finding a state of unknown to you engine. This way, it is like cancer screening test - you don't expect to find it, but why not do it if it is cheap and easy?

I have sent a sample every oil change since new. My old camry, I value less, so I send a sample once a year or so. For me 35$ is worth seeing 'Normal' on the report.

I’ve sent one in for my Tacoma when I suspected fuel in my oil due to it smelling extremely strong of gas. Came back within limits for the flashpoint and my mind was out at ease. They suggested a 7,500 mile oil change also. I haven’t sent one in since but I will at some point just to see if things are showing up more in the oil indicating some wear issue.

Of course it depends what you’re looking for out of the test. I know some people send them in every oil change just because. If you’re curious send one in and see…at least you have a baseline at that point if you have any concerns in the future.

I always use a Cat dealer for any fluid analysis. Less expensive and better in my opinion. I use Butler Cat in North Dakota.

If you're truly interested in saving money, an oil analysis is the way to go.

It will be able to tell you how far you can safely go on each oil change for the conditions YOU drive regularly.

Let's say you've been doing 5k oil changes and you find you can safely go 7,500 based on the analysis. It would only take you a few oil changes to pay for that analysis. Then you're saving money from there on out.

But if you want to blindly change oil at 5k because the internet said that was best and potentially pour money down the drain, that's ok too.

An oil analysis is cheap insurance, driven by data.

Just follow toyota recommended when to change the oil. Then you won't have any warranty issues.

you need lab test oil to find out how far the car engine worn. everything you need to learn about oil, check: The Petroleum Quality Institute of America (PQIA) conducts independent testing of consumer, commercial, and industrial lubricants. PQIA’s mission is to serve the consumer of lubricants by testing and reporting on the quality and integrity of lubricants in the marketplace. It is expected that this improved visibility of quality will lead to wider conformance by lubricant manufacturers to specification and performance claims.

I used to own a BMW E92 M3. A lot of owners of that car all over the forum used to swear by doing Blackstone tests to see if there were rod bearing metals in the oil. Unless you park your vehicle and not move it when you send the test out you likely will be driving a problem vehicle if there is a problem anyway. If it does find a problem what are you going to do? If you are out of warranty which a 2022 vehicle is likely leaving soon what are you going to do run into the dealer with the printed out PDF I have metal in there! I want you to replace it for me! They will roll their eyes at you
