I have a 22 with 79k miles. Was wondering if anyone has changed their trans filter. I did the drain and and fill at 60k miles

I wouldn't bother until at least 100k miles. It's just a metal screen you can clean and reinstall it.

Most people here only do drain and fill.

I did mine at 60k ('17 Tacoma and filled drained almost 3 gallons of ATF), remember to get a pan gasket and the crush washers, at least, for the drain plug.

is the gasket sold separately from toyota? I would go OEM. Thanks for the heads up.

Did you mean quarts not gallons.

    Yes.

Nope, I drained and filled repeatedly to get as much of the old ATF out of the system.

If you regularly drain and refill fluid, there is no reason to open it up to clear filter.

    My opinion...
The risk of stripping threads to drop the pan isn't worth doing the filter/screen.
Just do a drain and fill.

That said, I did strip the pan at the drain plug on a tacoma once while doing a drain/fill. The crush washer caught and stretched itself up into the threads somehow.

It is not necessary to drop the pan and change the strainer at this point. Wait until you get seepage at the pan and change it then...

It's a strainer. No change needed.

+1 for a drain and fill.

The “filter” is closer to a pickup tube honestly. The screen inside is not fine enough to do any filtration.

There are aftermarket options to add an inline filter along with a cooler. But unless you’re running very hot temps the stock configuration should last +300,000 miles. Which is more than most users will push these rigs.
