Can I configure my 4Runner to allow the motor to be running while I lock the doors? We have dogs that travel with us and with our last vehicle, we do that. The 4Runner won't let us. Anyone know if this is possible? Thanks.

What year? In my 2019 I can lock the door from the outside with the extra key with the engine running.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
    You have two options:

    1) There’s an actual key inside the fob, press a button on the side of fob to eject the key. Then lock the door manually with the key. You’ll also have to unlock it manually using this method.
    2) Turn off vehicle. Get out. Lock door. Remote start again (using the app on your phone - if you have that option)! BOOM!

Option 1 is the best way, and it'll never fail you.

2019 OR doesn't have a key & fob like that. It has this:

What method are you using to try to lock the doors while the engine's running, that the "4R won't let you"?

Basically no with the G key from factory unless you installed a remote start system and you remote start it or use 2 keys.

Thanks for your replies. I had previously tried to lock the door, with the motor running, with the fob. I tested it last night and I can have the motor running and lock the door manually with the key. That gets me what I needed. Thanks.

Follow up to this question, if someone were to break in while you’re away, would they be able to drive off? Or would the engine shut off without the fob nearby?

Yes it will be drivable, but the message stays up "missing key", and it will not be restarted without fob.
Try: start engine normally, then disable fob and try to drive.
disabling fob is easy: press two times CLOSED and hold OPEN until light on fob blinks 4 times. enabling it just press OPEN or any button on fob.

Do you know how long it will run for this way? I am pretty sure it shuts off, but not too sure after what time.

If you remote start your 4Runner it will run for up to 10 minutes or until you open the door (which kills the engine). It's a saftey/EPA thing probably. They don't want you to run your engine for hours at idle.

Yeah it’s so you don’t start your car remotely while it’s parked in the attached garage, get distracted, and accidentally kill your family with the exhaust.

So it's dual use. It stops stupid people from accidently commiting murder and it stops ACTUAL murders from intentionally trying to kill people. Way to go Toyota!

No, it only stops the accidental murders (I guess that would be manslaughter.) If the intent is actual murder just leave the key in the car.

As an idea, if you add an aftermarket remote start, you can start your 4Runner remotely with key. It will stay locked until you unlock your vehicle. A popular one in the community is ACCESSORIDES if you want to look into it.
