Hey guys, just pick up my first 4runner yesterday! 2001 Limited Auto
The cruise control light doesn't turn on... nothing else is acting weird so I think this rules out the fuse. What's my next step?

    Thanks

Does cruise work despite the lights not illuminating?

No, the cruise control doesn’t work.

so its not the light, its the cruise control itself.

Welcome to the forum from North Carolina.

I would still perform a quick check of all of the fuses. Would then check all of the easily accessible switches in and around the steering wheel/ column area to ensure nothing has been unplugged.
Faulty brake switch can also prevent CC from activating off the top of my head

Neither work. The light doesn't go on and the cruise control doesn't work.

I'm thinking your switch is bad or you have a bad ground. The fuses should be checked, but looking at the schematic, I'm pretty sure you'd find the car not actually working correctly since the switch comes after the fuses and the ECM. Meaning if a fuse was blown the ECM wouldn't be happy. HOWEVER, checking fuses is free.

The cruise control switch (CCS) has a single GREEN wire that comes off from pin 22 of the ECM. When the CCS is switched ON, it should short across itself to GROUND which is a BROWN wire coming from the CCS.

So if you remove the switch, and switch it ON, it should be shorted between the two contacts. If you test the BROWN wire it should be a healthy ground. If not, then you have to chase that issue.

I think this also means that if you short the brown and green wires together the ECM should light up the Cruise light on the gauge cluster. If this happens the switch is bad. If not...then maybe the ECM has an issue or a bad ground in that brown wire.

These are the values when you activate various modes of the CCS:

(D)22-GROUND : Continuity with cruise control SW at on
Approx. 1540 Ω with CANCEL SW on in cruise control SW
Approx. 240 Ω with RES/ACC SW on in cruise control SW
Approx. 630 Ω with SET/COAST SW on in cruise control SW

C14 CRUISE CONTROL SW [COMB. SW]
    5-4 : Approx. 1540 Ω with CANCEL SW on
    Approx. 240 Ω with RES/ACC SW on
    Approx. 630 Ω with SET/COAST SW on

I'll be honest, looking at the CCS diagram...I'm not sure how it works. If the Cruise switch is ON, and stays on, then how can any of the other switches affect the circuit?

I haven't had one of these switches in my hand but maybe the Cruise switch is a momentary switch that just shorts to ground for a short time.

Edit: I played with the one in my car, it must be a momentary switch, that makes more sense.

Double check the your brake switch by the pedal.

EDIT- follow your brake pedal up, and you will see a small plastic switch. The rig has to know, your off the brake, or cruise wont be bothered.

That may not be true. I believe the light on the gauge should still come on, regardless. If that is working then I'd chase the 6 other items (like the brake pedal switch) that participate in the functioning of cruise control.

I can be on my brake and the light comes on. So I don't know why you think otherwise. Does it work differently on your 2018?

Yes. a 5th gen is completely different than your 3rd gen.
So you are on your brake and your cruise light can come on ?
Edit- not your brake light. The cruise light dude.

Yes sir. I'm only talking the cruise light on the dash.

But cruise doesnt work either. (light wont work, if cruise doesnt) Check.
So you hit the brake, and your cruise light comes on. Check.
Ya. Im lost bud. Wish ya luck. Hope you get it sorted.

I'm not the one with the problem. Mine works perfectly. In a 3rd gen the correct operation for the cruise light on the dash is simply:
Key in the ignition set to "on".
Press the cruise button on the end of the cruise control stalk to turn the light on the gauge on and again to turn it off.

I just went out for funsies and tried it all with the brake and no brake and the cruise control button lights up the dash no matter what. So my guess is that the ECM doesn't care about that.

The original poster said that the Cruise light on his dash didn't work and that cruise didn't work. Based on the schematic I pulled up, I would focus on the switch and the dash light first. I do not know what all the ECM uses internally to make that decision to light up the dash light but I bet it's going to be very simple.

If the switch and wiring check out good...and the light still doesn't light then yeah, maybe the ECM is being picky about all the other things in the circuit and keeps it off.

Also, if the brake light switch was bad, wouldn't the rear brake lights not work? The poster didn't say that was a problem.
