I provided a couple detailed posts about tires you might (or might not) find interesting. In short, I landed on the new Bridgestone Dueler A/T Ascent tire because it very effectively handles both paved and off-road conditions. The Ascents are just OK in snow so I wouldn't suggest running them all winter unless temperatures and conditions are moderate. They're fine during shoulder seasons where I roll but Blizzaks are needed for most of the winter.

I used to run stock sized BFG AT KO2’s, but changed to stock sized TOYO Open Country ATIII’s. Really liking them!

You will get many recommendations as most drivers like what they have.
So there is dirt, rocks, mud, sand, freezing rain, scorching hot pavement etc.
How important is your ride comfort and tire noise?
Do you plan on airing down & up whenever you leave pavement?
Do you want P-metric (SL or XL) or LT (grades C, D or E).
I chose a mostly highway style P-metric stock size extra load All Terrain with mild sidewall protection. Also quiet, smooth, 3peak snow rated and my average mpg dropped maybe .1 or .2 mpg.
Heavy tires can drop your mpg a lot!

I'm in the same boat here, looking at 265/70/17's - AT design. My list, leaning towards the Baja Boss's as the 4Runner is my fun car. The Cooper's are the sensible choice it seems, but if I was to go on a local offroad ride around Southern Ohio/Kentucky I would need something that clears mud well:

Just completed this same journey myself and landed on Falken AT4W in 265/70/17 on FN FX Pro wheels (17x8 with 0mm offset).

Good Year Duratrac RT's in stock size, fantastic tire in all conditions and with Kevlar. And borderline Mud tire without the noise and poor traction in normal conditions.

Scott why not consider some mud terrain tires. As your 4Runner is your fun car. I’ve had mud terrains before. The biggest difference to AT’s was a slight hum on the highway, which was only an issue on multi day driving trips.

Gulo may I ask how the road noise is on pavement with the Bridgestone A/T as compared to the stock?

I have the Standard Bridgestone Stock tires now (not AT) on my 2024. Your tires alone make the 4R look more aggressive. I only drive my 4R in summer so winter driving would not be an issue

I have a set of these sneakers going on this weekend. The price (just under 250 each installed) is what convinced me, and I have almost always bought Goodyear tires. The Toyos where a close 2nd, but again the price talked. I have a set of GY ultra terrains that were great for my usage and if they were not a Direct Tire only item, probably would have gotten a 2nd set.

Road noise in the city and on highways with the Dueler A/T Ascents is barely noticeable.

I plan on some really long drives, so not sure Mud terrains are ideal for those trips? I guess I would think they'd be terrible on wet roads, which we have a lot here in Southern Ohio, we get more rain that Portland, but it comes down much heavier!

Trying to split that difference of good road use, and yet decent on mild trails. My guess is any of the tires I'm looking at will be fine, may be suffering from self caused analysis / paralysis :)

If you don't want to lift, a 255/75/17 is about.5" taller and a bit narrower.

Honestly though, going from the stock street tires to a legit ALL TERRAIN will give the illusion of going up in size.

Some say 275/70/R17 fit, but most of those are load range E and substantially heavier and costlier than the equivalent 265/70. Not worth it, IMO.

This looks like the vehicles we saw all over the place when we visited Iceland. Talked to one woman who had a simply massive Ford Excursion kitted out with giant tires like this and she said it was for driving on the glacier.

Ordered some Open Country AT3's today (SL). My stock Dualer HT's are all at the wear marks, not so great in the rains we've been having. I'll give the Toyos a go for now, see how they do - seem like a good fit for my needs, liked the fact they are a bit lighter weight too.

Thanks for sharing your post/photos, appreciate the insight. Nice looking 4runner!
