Stock 265 vs 285 tires, is it really worth all the trouble?

The input isn’t really of much use unless people also include information regarding the type of roads/conditions they drive on in my opinion.

255/80/17 is a popular size alternative to 285/70/17. They're a pinch taller, but can be easier to fit due to being narrow.

Yup. A couple of the Tacomaworld guys I hang out with have them and I haven't heard any complaints. I think skinnies look weird on 4Runners, but that's just my opinion.

I didn’t take many before pictures with the stock 265s but these are 275s(the pic with the Thule box) with no lift just to give you some more context. I’ll try to remember to post more pictures when I install the 2” dobinsons I bought in a couple weeks.

 

This makes me want to ask a wider question: why does the conversation revolve around 265 vs 285 and exclude any mention of 275? I ask out of ignorance, not judgment.

I think Falken is the only player in the 275/70R17 category, and they’re about 11 heavier than the P285/70R17 Toyo AT3

 

275’s would be a great choice for many, however most 275’s are E load, with the exception of the Wildpeaks.

 

Yeah that was a concern for me as well. On weight are you talking about the AT4Ws? I think I remember them being especially heavy. I got the AT3Ws on a close out sale specifically trying to avoid extra weight.

 

An LT tire is going to be heavier than a comparable sized P-metric standard load tire.

among LT tires, Falkens tend to be heavy compared to competitors; that applies to AT3W and AT4W models. That said BFG KO3s are significantly heavier than KO2s, so maybe the weight is a product of current technology?

I decided to stick with 265’s for the reasons I mentioned in my earlier post.

265 UltraTerrian AT on FN(x) 17x8.

 

I think you are going to like the Ultra Terrains, I have been on them for 2 years and think they are the best AT tire I have run off and on road.

 

I’m really liking them and it was only a 20 minute ride home. The difference was so drastic I’ll go as far as saying it was Lexus quiet and smooth.

The stock Terra Grapplers were taken off with tread still at 6/32 and were sounding more like a MT than an AT.

 

255/75s KO2s with no regrets over last 38,000 miles.


I think the key decider is if you are looking for function or appearance. One, the other or Both can be legitimate requirements for a buyer.

I have never had the 255/75’s fail to function for my needs, plus fuel Econ is very near stock. Plus no one has made fun of me, (at least not to my face), for having skinny tires.

 

I use to wonder about farmers I saw with skinny tires that ran through all sorts of mud, clay year after year. I think they figured it out a long time ago. lol

 

How’d the balancing go ?

 

I put the GY Ultraterrains on my previous Taco and liked them better than the KO2's I had run so many times before.

 

I didn’t ask for the road force numbers on purpose. I’m going to go by feel and see if there are any issues.

At check in I told the young gentlemen these 4Runners are particular to low road force numbers and he said, yea I know. So I left it at that.

Got up to 70mph on my way home. Smooth as butter.

Here’s an update of 275s with a 2” lift. I did the install on Sunday so I’m not sure if there will be any more settling or not

Re: BMC etc; if you stick with stock offset wheels you quite possibly won't need to do anything but adjust the fender liner to run 285s. Everyone commenting in this thread who has had to cut stuff, even if lifted, has aftermarket wheels as near as I can tell.

Re: 265 v 285; obviously use case varies, opinions vary, budget varies, etc; but I am of the opinion that bigger is better, to a point. Obviously at a certain size there is a point of diminishing returns, but 33s look proper and do offer a little more ground clearance. I've recently become a big proponent of pizza cutters, for a "true" 33" tire, but I do acknowledge they ain't for everyone.

I think they look fine under an SUV though, @Thatbassguy. You are really only losing 0.5" width.

Edit: I'm not going to deny that skinnies seem to perform well based on what I read. I just don't care for the way they look on the 5th gen. I actually think they might look good on earlier generations of the 4runner.
