I mean just inside the vehicle but then it will take up space and someone may possibly break a window to get it. Are you sure it was stolen? Cable cut?

Why would anyone want to steal the stock crappy spare and steel rim ? Mine went into a dumpster at 940 miles .

The chain that dangles under the spare wheel is there so you can put it around the spokes of the spare wheel and lock it with a padlock.

I'd use an Abus 70IB/45 marine padlock because it has a plastic cover over it that wont scratch and it's designed for dirty environments.

You can also buy a cable bike lock do the same thing, put it through a spoke and wrap around the frame. Don't use a combo lock, they dont tolerate the grime.

Dang, I can barely get my spare down with the tool, I would think it would be difficult to steal.

    Padlock is a great idea.

It's a chain, not a cable. If someone cut the chain to get at your spare, there's nothing practical you can do aside from parking in a locked garage. Being an NY vehicle, I suspect the endcap that engages the wheel's centerbore rusted out, and the spare fell off on the road.

For that much trouble I'd have stolen the catalytic converters lol, much better value.

For anyone to steal something, it must be valuable. I don't see 2011 spare to be of any value. It is more likely failed due to NY rust and fell off after hitting a pothole. Drive around your regular route and see if you can find it.

If someone stole mine I'd finally get the motivation to put on that 5th OR wheel & tire I've had sitting around for months.

    I dunno guys
You really think OP could be driving, somehow have the spare fall off, CLEAN, no noise n just drop straight down n chill

I feel like if the tire had indeed fell off there’d be a different title to the thread

“Spare fell off while driving=Final Deatination 16”

My friend was trailering his boat up the interstate early one morning. Dual axle trailer. Got to the boat ramp and he only had 3 wheels . One fell off somewhere on the 40 mile trip and he said he had no idea it had come off .

I'm with Sin4r, I think the cable rusted and it fell off. If your doing 60 mph and it drops, it's probably going to clear the truck before it bounces off of the pavement.

Something similar happened to me except I was the unfortunate one that ate the tire bouncing down interstate 5 at 70mph. Apparently he just put the lug nuts on his large dual axle travel trailer on hand tight trying to get out early on a holiday weekend and forgot to torque them down.

No one is going to believe me, but it's the gods honest truth. i had one rear bilstein shock stolen off my Tacoma. Right out of my driveway. The thief actually put the wheel back on and I didn't realize it until after I had driven the truck for a bit.

A friend of mine had the transfer case linkage stolen right off his 2012 Dodge Power Wagon while it was in his driveway.

Not that it will be of any use in this case, some states and companies permit people to insure their cars for theft, vandalism and acts of God without necessarily having collision coverage.

Comprehensive coverage covers theft items and is nowhere is as expensive as collision coverage..

Comprehensive coverage deductibles should be as low as possible. $500 is useless... I carry a $50 deductible. The difference in premium between those two deductibles Is less than a pack of gum every month.

Also some other friends of ours had the hood stolen off their Toyota while it was parked right outside of their condo window.

That’s one considerate S.O.B. No, really I mean it. It was very thoughtful of that thief to put the wheel back on.

However, I hope you checked the torque on the wheel lugs. You can’t trust anyone to do that right nowadays lol;)

Maybe the tire was too new looking. I’m not joking, but maybe you can cover up the replacement spare with mud and just make it look old and undesirable. What else is there to do?
