Why is it there, will it cause any issues if I remove it? Thanks

It helps keep the airflow through the radiator. Not the same thing but I run without the plastic undertray due to my aftermarket skids without issues but want to add it back at some point.

Probably there to help air go through the radiator rather than around it. Why it needs to be foam rather than plastic is a mystery to me.

If it's falling apart, you can remove it. I did that a few years ago after mine was in bits and pieces.
I haven't noticed any change in my temperature gauge.
That area is prone to rusting. Keep it clean and apply fluid film. I applied POR15 and it's been like that for years now.

i removed the foam the day i bought it new. I cut and ziptied some plastic from oil jugs to fill the gap. My last one developed rust from the foam retaining moisture and was almost rotted all the way through the metal.

It's there to trap water and rust out the front crossmember, so you can buy another Toyota in 15 years.

Jokes aside, it's to block off openings around the radiator, so air will flow through the radiator rather than around it. The 3rd gen Tacoma is designed better in this regard, using a rubber sheet instead of the foam.
