I see another thread with rust around the latch. I suggest that individual should pop off the plastic piece and really see what it looks like. Ours is as bad and will have to be addressed soon. I probably will head over to the dealer and sort of demand they fix it. The rest of our 4 runner is spotless including the frame. Maybe start a class action suit? This to me is a design flaw.

Demand they fix it? It's ten years old, they're going to laugh at you.

Mine is rusty too, to the point it wouldn't latch correctly. I soaked it down with PB Blaster and let it soak, it's worked fine since then. I've added lubricating the latch to my regular maintenance schedule.

Its lubricated and works fine but will fall off eventually because of the rust around it. I wouldn't expect the dealer to fix it but they are close enough to pay a visit and after they laugh tell them we are ready to buy a new one but not now and will tell all my friends and bash Toyota on social media.

Badass? all I need to accomplish is to get one person to not buy a Toyota and watch the smirk grow.

Over a rusty latch on a 15 year old truck? Let us know how that goes for you. You're barking up the wrong tree here.

Is it 2030 already. If the rest of the truck is spotless I consider this a design flaw.

Clean it up and repaint or get a new tailgate if it’s the gate. No one at the dealer, corporate or people on social media will do anything.

Joining this silly thread. You're outside of the corrosion coverage. Good luck

A used gate is $1500 I could install but would need to be painted and who knows how long a used one will last.

Sorry. 10 year old. You're entitled. To your opinion, and wanting something for free when it's not warranted. A common malaise these days, unfortunately. Your answer to the problem is to have a temper tantrum on social media instead of simply correcting the problem.

Came here to see how many others had this problem and what they did all I get is people telling me I'm an idiot. I have a 20 yr old Dodge truck that has no rust anywhere and has been through the same weather. I'm out

If you want to discuss a real design flaw, that would be the driver's side needle bearing that's been there for decades. Guess what? Toyota's not going to do anything about that, either, including fixing it with a bushing. Even on the new 6th gen.
