OK. Stupid question time, sorry, but I need a for sure answer on this. I cannot duplicate or test this question to get an answer on my own.

A few days ago, some stupid SOB f_ck tard pulled out on me. I was going approx. 40 MPH. My ‘22 T4R safety system piled on my brakes automatically even before I could hit the brakes myself. The braking was very violent, but necessary, I suppose. I was pissed. I am glad there was no one close behind me, because if there was, I probably would have gotten rear ended. I do think this system probably saved me from hitting that dumb f_ck.

Long story short- Does anyone here know for certain whether or not this automatic brake system activates the vehicle’s rear brake lights when something like this happens? I mean like even before I myself hit the brake pedal which would normally activate the brake lights? I hope I am explaining myself sufficiently.

Yes. I had this happen on my 21' Taco and my 23' 4Runner, the dashboard lit up "BRAKE!!!" and the nose dived because the brakes were applied hard. I tapped the brakes within a half second of the dash lighting up. When it happened on my 23 4Runner the person behind me pulled up to me at the light and said "My whole back end lit up before the nose dive." I assumed he meant my 3rd brake light and my tail light brake lights.

The brake lights light up because the braking system was engaged.

All righty Barracho, I am going up accept your reply, thank you sir. In my case, I didn’t notice whether my dash display lit up saying “BRAKE!!!”, but I assume that it did then.

I guess it makes sense that Toyota engineers should know enough to ensure that the rear brake lights should and do activate during automatic safety system braking. Thanks again.

^Remember automatic braking happens with varying intensity fairly often with adaptive cruise control engaged, if the traffic in front slows down on the highway.

My dashboard lit up and I heard a loud BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP over and over. Did you hear a very loud and annoying beep over and over and over?

Here's a great way (I think) to describe it and to prove my theory: I work in IT. If I wanted to fix a computer or server remotely, I remote into it using RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol). This enables me to take full control of it as if I'm sitting in front of it and as if I'm actually touching the mouse & keyboard. Get it? If I start typing, words appear on the screen, but the keyboard isn't being touched at all.

The same thing is happening to your 4Runner. Toyota, in a sense, is remote controlling your vehicle for you (temporarily). And because Toyota remotely controlled the brakes, your vehicle is acting as if you are actually pressing said brakes. That makes the 3rd brake light come on.

Hey Borracho, yes, now that you mention it, I do remember hearing beeping when this incident occurred. I just wasn’t looking down at my instrument panel while it occurred.

It really pissed me off that my brakes got beat on so hard like that. I’m usually careful with and easy in the operation of my vehicles. But, I guess the alternative would have been a possible collision, not even of my fault, and then I would have been exponentially even more pissed off. Thanks again.
