3 Blink Turn Signal

I've had one installed in my Canadian 2018 for about 9 months now. I haven't noticed any change in the functionality of the DRLs or turn signals. Everything works as it was before with the bonus of the Diode Dynamics SmartTap features.

Unfortunately not. @SROak got a one off harness as a proof of concept. Still working on keeping lane departure alert. Been trying to use off the shelf components to make it easier to build, easier to hide in the dash, and cheaper for the end users but it’s looking like that’s not going to work

 

How about early 5th gen? I've 2013 Trail (No Automatic DRL), can you make module for it? Any functionality concerns?

Can’t confirm 100% since the flasher relay part numbers are different but the connector is the same and the wiring diagrams denote pre-August 2019 and post August 2019 as different but do not call out a difference between 2010-2013 and 2014+

 

Ressing this thread for the purpose of locating/purchasing this adapter to work with the smart tap cf18. I didnt think I would care this much about my 4runner not having this but clearly I was wrong! Are these still available to order?

 

I’m about to sell my brand new full kit for 14-19 model year as I know have a 2023 4R and is not compatible for it.

 

Might want to hold onto the SmartTap if you want to do it to your 2023 in the future

 

You can build it for yourself if you’re somewhat handy. I can build it for you, but I would strongly advise building it yourself if you’re worried about cost. Much cheaper to DIY. You can avoid paying additional taxes, transaction fees, labor, and shipping of the final product.

 

Diode dynamic only offers up to 2009 model, as there is no cf18 relay on Gen 5 4R. What am I not getting right here?

 

It’s not terribly hard to adapt the 4R wiring to CF18 on the 2014-2019 models. Than you can slot in any CF18 flasher relay. SmartTap being the most feature rich

 

That’s the reason this kit is available. You will need to read the thread to get informed, nonetheless is a very easy mod.

 

I tried to figure out what is the exact solution - but I am stuck trying to understand the basics ;-) You guys are way too deep into this and for somebody who just started the thread, it's not very clear.

The harness @Kezin developed (post 78) has two sockets - where to get them from? Do you have parts numbers perhaps?
Also, this harness shows a device from Curt Manufacturing, but does not talk about any other flasher unit which you say can be used. Does it mean that this "Curt Manufacturing" unit is enough? Is this harness effectively creating a bypass that you insert into the socket under the steering wheel (post 17) or is it something else that was developed over the course of this thread that I missed?

The harness adapts the vehicle’s wiring from the 18 pin connector that Toyota uses to a more standard (but older) CF18/LM449 socket. So the two connectors you see are the vehicle side and the CF18 side. The 18 pin connector for the vehicle I was never able to find a part number for but was able to find an obscure listing on AliExpress that was the correct connector. After the initial order I put in, they removed the listing and I have not been able to find the connector again. The seller was able to send me a bulk order after I reached out to them directly but they had a minimum qty of 50 (I think? Can’t remember exactly). I still have quite a few of them. Part number on the CF18 connecter is 90980-10799. If you find the 18 pin connector and have a part number, that would be awesome. I did find it on some Japanese website at one point but they never responded to my inquiry to purchase.

The most feature rich CF18 flasher is made by Diode Dynamics and is the SmartTap so that’s what you see mentioned here. Most of the other CF18 flashers are just LED compatible to eliminate hyper flashing.

The Curt module is 59187. Toyota chose to run their brake and turn signals for the trailer socket through the flasher relay so this module is needed to retain trailer functionality. You can completely ignore this part if you have removed your hitch or don’t plan to ever tow with your vehicle.

 

Just reiterating - this is by far one of my favorite mods! I use it many times a day. Most convenient when switching lanes and or going onto an on-ramp so I don't need to manually cancel the turn signal. I use the factory operation when making 90degree left or right turns.

 

You don't need to convince anyone here in this thread 4Runner is the first car in over 20 years that I own that comes without it for some reason. I guess it's just some local LAW or an unmet compliance condition in NA market that triggered this to be unavailable in the first place, because you can't really find a new car (at least where I live) that would not be equipped with 3-blink feature. And nobody even lists this as a feature anymore in spec sheets, because it's just a common thing to have.

 

I doubt it's a law or anything. My 3rd gen Tacoma had it. Probably more likely cost cutting.

What's really annoying is driving a car all week that has it, then driving the 4 Runner on the weekends that doesn't. I'm sure I've received some ill feelings due to my one-blink lane changes.

 

Not a regulatory restriction, just Toyota not changing the architecture from the beginning of 5th gen in 2010, when tap to blink wasn't common.

Tacomas got it in 2016 with the 3rd gen.

 

April update? Still staying hopeful.

 

File that one under the same "quirks and features" as the missing dusk sensing headlights on 5th gen SR5s and ORs.

 

Pretty much. I've sorta fixed that, but it's not the same. If you get the light sensor and plug it in it doesn't work quite like it should, but it won't dim the dash lights if you use the headlights during the day. Think I got the idea from here.

 

The worst part about that is they had the parts and everything for the auto on/off headlights, but instead of making that standard they made sure 99% of ORPs had sunroofs whether people liked it or not. LOL.

 

Not me! Not that I wouldn't mind having one, but I wasn't so lucky.

 

April update is we are moving houses (1852 miles) so I do not have access to my tools right now to make changes unfortunately and likely won’t until early June. Last thing I was working on was getting LDA to work. I did get it to work kind of. Was hoping sending a ground signal to the IPC with every flash of the turn signal would be often enough to cancel LDA. It was sometimes and not others. Needs to be a constant ground for 5 seconds after the stalk is pushed to allow time to merge before LDA engages again
