The air cargo office where I worked was alongside the runway from which Jimmy Carter left New Orleans after watching Georgia in the 1980 Sugar Bowl.

Can't stand these clowns that park across multiple spaces b/c their ride is sooooo special. ;-)

That was actually one of my favorite things to see during my few years at Delta. They'd park it there if its usual hangar space wasn't available for whatever reason - and of course if the weather was decent. I like to capture detail when I shoot, so here are a couple more of the venerable "Ship 41." My pics circa 2003.

"AM 24" means this plane was assigned to Air Mail Route 24, which ran across the south from Fort Worth to Charleston and was awarded to DL in 1934.

My paternal grandfather was a Signal Corps pilot during WW1. My daughter was an OH58D Pilot and commanded a Shadow drone platoon before retiring a few years back. When she attended the CWO advanced course, I spent some time with her at (what was) Fort Rucker; the Army Aviation HQ. While there, we toured the museum and I got to see a restored JN4 Jenny…the same type my Grandpa flew. I shuddered when I saw the exposed valves and rocker arms on the engine! Those guys must’ve been cut from sturdy cloth…

When your Grandfather flew the JN4 Jenny they were state of the art, it was like flying a F35 today, I'm sure he thought he was the TOP GUN of his day and may very well have been, and was thrilled and very honoured to be flying one!!!
