Before getting my 22 4R I had a 2011 Honda Pilot. It was a solid vehicle and I sold it with 250k miles. I was an avid poster on the pilot forum. The difference between the pilot forum and this 4R forum is all about mechanical issues. On the Pilot forum it was all…..I just got a P0XXX check engine light. On this 4R forum you barely see mechanical issues. So happy to be a 4R owner. I have 77k miles on my 22 4R. Flawless except for my seized caster camber bolts.

I wish I could have another runner that I could just keep in a shed and unravel it like 10 years later after this current 4runner gets to like half a milly miles

From 2nd hand experience my friends buying Honda Pilot, IMO 2016 and up are junk.

One friend trade in 2nd gen Pilot which didn't have major issues till 110K (or something like that.) But the 3rd gen was junk compared to 2nd gen.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
I have given this serious consideration. I thought I would buy an identical twin to my existing 4Runner and alternate the driving so it doesn't sit idle and oiled up parts don't dry out or lock up. You know, drive 4Runner A for 1 month, then park it and drive 4Runner B for 1 month.

That would mean I'd drive a 4Runner for the next 35-ish years. But that would probably make me even weirder than I already am. The guy who owns two identical vehicles at the same time.

There's nothing wrong with that.. I have 3 of the same sedans and use them exactly like you say. Also parts diagnosing is a breeze lol

Since I’m full time work from home I’m about 6.5k a year, at this rate with regular maintenance I’m hoping my 23 lasts about 25 years or more. I’m 12 or so years from retirement so hoping this truck is the last one I buy. Already treated the frame and will continue that inspection/treatment along with fluid changes based on age where appropriate instead of just miles.

Yeah the damn oil consumption issue. I remember changing the pcv and it was the scariest thing you could imagine. Not hard but they would become brittle and it was very easy to only get it half out of the head while the remainder stayed in. Fing nightmare.

Hey, what’s wrong with having 2 Gen 5 Runners? We do! Plus an FJ40!

If it works, do it. And we had a total POS 2017 Pilot when it was new. Hangar Queen. Spent most of its days at the dealership broken. When the bumper to bumper 3/36 expired, it was gone replaced with a 4Runner. Never looked back.

Haha do it. It's trip. I have two identical 23 ORPs in white, opening my garage is always an exercise in making sure I am not in the matrix.

It's funny because my driveway has two manual compact sedans, one 20 years old, on it so from a passerby perspective we are probably the most destitute family in the neighborhood, everyone else got a Tesla or big 3/4 ton truck proudly displaying. I prefer people to think we are poor.

Ditto! The 22 Limited and the 21 Venture will probably outlive me and my wife - but our FJ40 (which is still new looking and gets driven nearly every day) is our "Escape from New York" vehicle - ie if the world melts down, that the vehicle we'll use to run for the hills.

I had a 2015! Similar experience, I did all maintenance on it, it was perfect. I sold it at 140K miles.
I wasn’t as much on the pilot forums but I know what you mean. More people posted about issues with their pilots. I got scared about the variable cylinder management and had anecdotal evidence that they failed firing. There was a member over there selling VCM-disable, which I guess everyone installed. But still it was scary to know that within a few days of buying the vehicle.

No such issues with 4R. Mine is ‘23 and I hope to hold on to it for a while. The only thing that will make me consider selling it before it’s time is if 200 series prices fall precipitously and I can afford one. one can hope!

variable cylinder management is a long term issue.
Since 2016 and up Pilots are direct injection only , carbon build up is a very common problem. Honda issued a service bulletin to replace 2016 or 2018 Pilot fuel injectors but I see same issue even on 2022s. Not only Pilot MDX with same engine has the same issue.

    upload_2025-4-14_8-31-19.png

One of my friend claimed warranty 2 times on his Pilot. Haven't talk to him about it. Who knows if he got it replaced for the 3rd time. I don't think there's any work around to avoid carbon build up on direct injection only vehicles.

Imagine if over the 15 year run of the 5th gen that Toyota had fixed the few problems that arise like the alignment bolts, brake calipers and rust proofing the frame. It would have been the greatest vehicle ever made.

hats off for maintaining your vehicle in tip top shape. Any paint re-sparey or just good old wash and some paint correction? Look very well for its age.

Just paid 1,400 for OEM LCAs because of seized caster/camber bolts.

I am the OP. I got 250k miles on the 2011 Pilot before I sold it, but did start experiencing the oil consumption issues. It was a matter of time before the spark plugs started fouling out. It was a good vehicle but the engine issues would have become severe. Sold it for 4k and put that money on a 4R.

Isn’t Honda also less forthcoming for issues with their vehicles. They have to be prodded more than other brands to fix issues at their dime.
I have heard Subarus are better here, and Toyota isn’t as bad. No personal experience ever, thankfully. But a company refusing to do the right thing makes for a nerve wracking ownership if you know of major issues with that brand.

Per the service bulletin injector failures covered for 10yrs/150K miles.
So far my friends have not paid anything. You book an appointment -> drop the vehicle in morning -> pick up in the evening. You get a shuttle van to go back home and back to dealership.
One friend still got a 1st gen Pilot and have not said anything wrong with it and have no intention of selling. His 3rd Gen Pilot is the troublesome child.

One of my purchase criteria when I bought my ‘24 4R was that my new vehicle could not have cylinder deactivation, stop/start, or direct injection. The Gen5s are sorta the last of a breed…simple, understressed, and well put together. My sister bought a Pilot last year. I didn’t care for it.

The start stop feature is the dumbest thing ever! And they know it’s so, because there’s always a button to turn that thing off. But it’s quite idiotic, how much milliliter fuel do we save per gallon with it?

My wife's '24 Outback has that auto-off feature, and I saw online where a guy makes a simple cable bypass for it to permanently keep it off. However, Mrs. 94hokie isn't ready to let me "modify" her still new car. Yet. So for now she just hits the button to turn it off when driving to/from work. But that cable is in her Outback's future.

A lot of us keeping an eye out for the 200 series. The market is going to be tight on that generation for some time to come, I am afraid, with the way the LC250 turned out, I just don't see a lot of 200 series owner giving theirs up for the 250 :/

Having a toggle doesn't necessarily make something dumb and I don't want to say so since that's how we get choice taken away just for the sake of optics.

Fuel savings are seen after several seconds typically and if you're interested, benefits in emissions and economy are small but absolutely there (and compounded at scale) and it yields the best results in cities.

But of course it can vary, worst implementation in terms of my experience was in a rental Soul, the best/smartest was in a rental Corolla Cross (gas-only).

    https://old.reddit.com/r/AskEnginee...artstop_technology_in_modern_vehicles_a_case/

(Of course you have to be willing to take the word of strangers online, but these takes check out IMHO. A lot more engineering and thought goes in than it may seem. The Corolla Cross took in brake pedal pressure, cabin temperature (with two settings available), battery condition, etc.)

I always chuckle hearing some 5000lb SUV driven by soccer moms weezing back to life at a stop light. Those 2 liter turbos are beaten within an inch of their life lugging Jayden and Kayden around to their next clarinet practice. But muh fuel savings! LOL.
