Question, what could be wrong with my filler neck area that would keep turning the gas pump off (i'm in California so i'm assuming its something with fuel vapors being sensed by the pump). When i get gas, it clicks off like 10 times each fill up, and not its not anywhere near full when it does it. I could have the gas light on and 10 seconds into filling up the tank it will shut off automatically until i reengage the handle, move it around a little bit, etc. Vapor canister toast?

Possibly a failing charcoal canister? Read that could be a symptom on TW.

If you're one of those that fill the tank until it shuts of and then keeps squeezing to add more, then you most likely have a flooded evap canister.

Have you tried filling on the slowest setting, with the nozzle not fully bottomed out??

never had the issue on any of our 4Runners but my old Trailblazer had that issue. I could replace the evap canister and the vent valve solenoid and the problem would go away for about 6 months then repeat...drove me nuts

It's happening to my old Trailblazer! It sucks. The old '86 Toyota never had that problem, it's still running. I would bet the evap canister is the culprit, over filling the tank may be one of the causes.

Had this issue once. Turned out it was a cap from a fuel additive bottle stuck in the neck of the gas tank filler tube.

Our TB is still hanging in there too. It's an 06, I passed it on to both my sons when they began driving, now they've moved on but don't want me to get rid of the ol girl. I finally just gave up trying to diagnose...figure I have a vac leak somewhere but never found it and it actually still drives great. The check engine light on that thing is like a member of the family at this point.

Is this at multiple gas stations? Or just one?

I have had issues at certain gas stations at times.

This was a normal occurrence on my 07 FJ. Pretty much had to have the nozzle upside down for it not to keep shutting off.

Someone in another topic on gas tanks posted the following.....maybe what your issue is.

"I went for over a year with a pinched evap vent hose (Tank to Canister); the effect of which was that filling the tank was a chore consisting of slowly metering the filler hose and having it pop off frequently. I discovered the pinched hose and replaced it."

Multiple gas stations, but not ALL. Actually filled up fine at a different Shell station this past week.
Good to know I’ll poke my head underneath and look for any signs of pinched lines.
