What do you keep in your ride for winter?

Well snow has just arrived and I was wondering what the snow people keep in their ride.

 

I also always have a tool set, first aid kit, water, mountain house food, and a way to boil water. Even keep a hammock in there. For winter I throw in the ice scraper/brush combo thingy and an extra coat, gloves, blanket, and a hat. I plan on adding some type of recovery strap but haven't got around to it yet after all the money outlay for the holidays.

 

Extra ammo, big-a$$ed knife and some cheap bourbon.

 

Winter, summer, spring or fall, I always have a tow strap, tree saver, snatch block, folding shovel, hatchet, USMC K-Bar, first aid kit, cord, fire starting kit, coat, 2 light blankets, space blanket, tactical flashlight, and folding traction plates. All fit nicely in a 23x18x8 plastic container. Where I live we are often out in remote areas with no phone service, and I like to be prepared.

What about an axe? You know in case a tree falls across the road?

 

I have a hatchet, and in the past we have pulled small trees out of the road with a tow strap or with the winch.

 

I usually pack the chainsaw when bad weather hits or if I venture to the trails.

 

Mediocre knife and darn good bourbon!!

 

Geez where do you live that you'd need all that on the moon?

 

Unless it's just assumed nobody mentioned a phone charger.

 

Thanks for the input. I have most of that stuff too and plan on adding some of your stuff. Tow strap and hatchet will be my first purchases.

 

You know Wally I have been thinking the same thing in regards to carrying my chainsaw but I am not sure I want to carry my full size Stihl.

 

I hear ya, I have the Stihl Farm Boss with a 20" bar. Kind of requires some thought on packing cuz it is pretty large and that is why I only pack it for certain things. Maybe one day I will throw down on a smaller model but really don't need it at this point (I rent). I recently picked up a nice carrying case for my saw. Keeps the smell down and holds the small MSR gas canister and bar oil in one convenient case. See link.

I live 40 miles south of the Colorado Rockies and spend a lot of time there doing photography and fly fishing. There are hundreds of old mining roads that are no more than trails and there is rain, snow and other hazards that we deal with at 10,000 ft.+.

Where I live is also surrounded by NM, AZ, and Utah badlands where we spend a lot of time. My photo pardner and I have been stuck more than once in some pretty hairy places, so we always go prepared. His Rubicon is equipped just about like my 4 Runner for getting stuck or stranded.

As far as a phone charger goes, I always have one, but a lot of the places where we go has no service, so it is a moot point.

Sometimes. Last time we were stuck it took about 45 minutes to dig my pard's Rubicon out of a snow drift. That was when we decided that we would not be with out winch's.

Who's vehicle have you found is all around more capable?

 

Are you asking between the Rubicon and the TRD OR? If so, I have to say that for what we do, no rock crawling or such, there is not much difference. I had a Rubicon before the 4 Runner and the 4 runner will go anywhere the Rubicon will. The main issue with the 4 Runner is the approach and departure angles. I had to add a lift to the 4 Runner to get the same angles that the Rubicon has, but the lift was less than the price difference between a Rubicon and a 4 Runner.

The ground clearance is the same for both, both have rear lockers, however the Rubicon has front lockers. The 4 Runner makes up for this with Crawl, Multi terrain and A-Trac. The Rubicon will unlock the torsion bars, 4 Runner has KDSS. The 4 Runner has a bit shorter wheel base than the Rubicon in 4 door configuration.

One plus of the 4 Runner. On dirt roads it does not leak dust like the Rubicon does. This is a big plus if you are a photographer or anyone else trying to keep equipment clean. My friend is considering trading his Rubicon for a TRD just for this reason. The TRD is also quieter, has a better ride, is a little roomier inside, and gets a bit better mileage.

Almost bought a Rubi when shopping for the new rig... one important factor not mentioned is the reliability between the two, a co-worker of mine has '15 Rubicon and is at his wits end with all of the technical issues and recalls it's had... so after all the research I did... I came up with pretty much the same comparison and decided the 4runner was a better buy.

 

No one has a pair of coveralls..insulated or not...I mean when ya gotta stop to pull out that jeep thats stuck cuz it just a little too light in the ass or its muddy and ya gotta pull that explorer out and ya can't show up to an appointment looking like linus from the peanuts..lol

If I'm headed to the snow, Stihl ms181, jet stove and some soup, change of clothes, tow strap, shovel ( to get Jeep's out) and a taurus judge.

 

Aside from the usual, tire repair kit, recovery strap, shackles, air compressor, shovel, and first aid kit. During winter I carry a canvas tarp, couple blankets, water, and a fire starter. I’m considering Taco Bell hot sauce after that news story though
