Wheel width

Hey guys, looking to buy new wheels for my 2024 SR5 premium. Keeping the 265’s in for now but may upgrade to 275 in the future. Is 17x8 with 0 offset a good wheel for both sized tires? Or do you recommend another width? Thanks.

 

Most manufacturers post the approved wheel width for all sizes offered on their website.

Thanks! Is there any benefit of running a wider wheel compared to a 7.0? Will it sit any higher off the ground with 7.0?

 

No and no.

Wheels on the skinnier side of the approved spec will tend to have less issues if you air down off road. (airing down too much can cause the tire to debead... This is arguably less likely with a skinnier wheel)

The width won't effect ground clearance or "height"
Instead, wheel width and offset work together to determine how far out your wheels "poke".



Negative offset = more trimming and clearancing.
0 offset (or slightly positive offset) Typically means less trimming since the wheel sits more inboard and does not increase "swing" aka scrub radius when turning.

I'm not entirely refuting the comment above about negative offset means more trimming, however Kai shows how positive offset depending on the circumstances also can create rub. I know the 37" demo he does here is excessive but the discussion on offset and location when turning is pretty thorough.

Sure. But in the context of the Prado platform 0 or "slightly positive" aka OEM spec is typically chosen to prevent rub. The tundra is IFS, but it's also a completely different vehicle. Hence why I did not cite that particular video (although it is a good one)

Yes you need to take in to account backspacing depending on aftermarket UCAs, spindle gussets etc. You should also be wary about straying too far from the OEM wheel spec without knowing what it impacts.

But in an effort of keeping it simple, and OP stating he wanted a 17x8" wheel with zero offset, I didn't want to dive into the details. That setup will work fine.
Many people run that size of wheel with very minimal trimming.

 

One follow up question, I’m looking at buying a set of Lock off-road wheels, either the Krawler or combat. And they only have them in 17x9, is that too wide for 265’s? Eventually looking at 275’s in the future. They only offer -12 offset in stock. Will that setup be ok for 265’s. I’ve watched that video, but he doesn’t get into wheel width. Seems -12 offset won’t poke out too far.

 

According to the Falken chart above 8.5 is the widest recommended rim for both the 265 and 275 tires. Other tire manufacturers may say differently.
