Looking to get 21-24 4Runner

So my Highlander is in the shop (21 platinum AWD). The transmission blew up and now I just don’t trust it. We are looking at a 5th gen T4R. My wife is somewhat onboard but needs to have a few features. She needs a front facing camera, 3rd row and leather. I just need 4WD since we do quite a bit of beach driving here.

Any years I should avoid and how common is a front facing camera. Is it easy to install a 3rd party front camera?

 

If you want all those features, get the Limited trim.

 

4Runner is a 4WD (this is for going offroad, not on-pavement driving) drive, make sure you understand that. Only limited has on-pavement full time 4WD that is equivalent to AWD in functionality. Make sure you understand the type of truck you are getting.

My 2024 4Runner has all the features you are looking for, I think any 22 or later Limited would. However, expect to pay close to new MSRP for a clean used example.

Your Highlander should be covered by T-SB-0008-21., I think getting rid of it AFTER it was fixed going to be an expensive proposition. Just change transmission fluid every year on the new transmission, it should get you through your ownership.

 

Yea we are covered under the warranty. Been in the shop since mid January and now they reported it’s going to be at least another 3 months.
So it sounds like the limited would not do very well in thick beach sand or is it capable like the SR5/TRD with 4wd?

 

You can find the third-row seating option in the SR5, SR5 Premium, and Limited trims. You probably want the SR5 Premium. I don't think you'll get the front facing camera though, but you can get this aftermarket camera:

Capability is the same between SR5/TRD in 4H and the Limited in 4HL (locked center) - only difference is reduced clearance/angles from the lower body cladding. (and wheel size from the factory if it matters)

 

Limited is the only option for 3rd row seating AND leather. Front facing camera? No knowledge of that.

 

Awesome. Since kids are a little older trying to go without a 3rd row since there are more options available and don’t necessarily need awd since we are in Florida.

 

Id look at a Lexus/sequoia/land cruiser

 

My 24 Limited has front facing camera, but resolution is not great and the button for it is inconveniently located. Personally, I rarely use it.

 

Resolution does not matter much to me. It’s more for the wife to view when parking.

 

There is front view and panoramic view (2 cameras under side mirrors). It does its job. There is also active cruise control that works reasonably well. I don't know about lane assist monitoring (I turned all nannies off at the delivery time) but there is no any kind self-steering system.

 

Limited is going to be the only real answer for all of these as others said.

 

I haven’t been paying much attention to the used market but hearing prices and demand have crept up on later model year, low mile 5th gens.

Pretty crazy some trims are still selling for significantly more than MSRP when they were new!

Even with all the worries about the new gen engines, I thought Toyota flooding customers with even more special trims would keep 5th gen TRD Pro prices in check…..I guess not lol.

 

You can find 24 models with the front facing camera in ORP and SR5P. It was a special $850 option. As noted resolution is not great. But the few times I’ve driven my 2024 I find it helpful in my garage pulling in as I organized it to park for winter.

I am not certain if that camera was an option prior to 2024. On my sticker the option is

Remember leather can easy be added to the seats if you find one that is SO close but missing this feature.

My carmax offer just went up by 1200 - I'm sitting at 25k if I wanted the runner gone
