Jack tool kit

What all comes in the tool kit that normally stores with our jacks? I noticed today my new (to me) 4Runner is missing everything but the jack. Is there a part number for the entire kit or do I need to buy each piece?

 

There's a roll with the extensions for the jack/spare holder.

 

Who did you buy it from? Dealer or private? I would inquire with them either way.

 

ya you need the kit to get your spare down from under the runner.

 

eBay or salvage yard. New from dealer is quite expensive for what it is.

If purchased from a dealer, I would go back and make contact & ask that they replace it. I would inform them they sold you a vehicle and have no way to change a tire without the kit!

I bought it from Carvana. Their website specifically states that removable accessories like the car jack are not guaranteed to be included. So I doubt they'll help replace it.

Can't seem to find a used one on eBay unfortunately. I did end up finding what I think is all the part numbers for everything in the kit. Comes out to like $120 from an online parts dealer. Might do have to do that if I can't find a used one.

Yeah it sucks, but I’m just glad I happened to notice this BEFORE I have a flat tire.

Seeing how expensive it is, I wonder if it got “lost” somewhere along the Carvana process. Maybe the Carvana employee who “finds” it will sell it to me on eBay.

 

I keep a 1/2 drive breaker bar laying behind rear seats in the back. That "lug"wrench is a joke if I ever need it. I need to take the 12 VDC inflator out of my ATV, I would use that if I ever needed to change the tire to get to safe convenient parking spot.

 

^^^ I keep an 18" breaker bar as well, but still have to have those jack handles in order to lower the spare. But yeah, using the Toyota provided jack handle to remove lugs? Pass.

 

Hmm, maybe I’ll just not buy the factory lug wrench and replace it with a breaker bar and socket. My truck did come with a factory installed security lug option, so not sure how they expect you to change a tire using the factory lug wrench and a security socket…

That or it was lost a years ago, which means there's a chance the spare tire hoist is seized from disuse...

You absolutely need the missing tools, but — if you have a compressor and a tire repair kit you may never use the spare … The first time I used a tire repair kit I felt very tenuous about it. I jacked up the car and removed the wheel, and afterwards I went to a tire shop and had the tire “properly” repaired. But after the second repair I was doing the job without removing the tire, and temporary repairs morphed into permanent ones (I’ve had tires with multiple repairs and only once did one of the plugs develop a slow leak. I just replugged it.) , and I never used the vehicle jack again. The only time I could envision using it is in the case of a sidewall cut. Maybe it’s just me, but it feels very empowering to be able to repair a puncture oneself.

 

I keep the plug kit in the canvas bag my inflator came in. H 1 rock puncture my previous ATV tire when we had just started a days riding. Luckily another guy was leaving the parking lot when I made it back. He had the inflator. I went to Pepboys the next day & bought mine. Neve had to use it & hope I never do!

 

Longshot but have you tried looking under the second row seats?

If you have the "security lug option", I presume that means each wheel has a lug nut that requires the key to remove it. I hope you have that key (a lot of people store that key in that tool bag). Otherwise, you will have to figure out how to remove those locking lug nuts or have a tire shop do it for you.

The way you remove a wheel with the usual tire lug wrench is one side of the lug nut key is the same size as the other lug nuts, so you put the key on the locking lug nut then remove both with the wrench.

I gave up on the locking lug nuts years ago. They're not worth the trouble.

It did come with the lug nut key in the glove box. Never looked at it closely, I see now that it fits in a 21mm socket. For some reason I assumed it would have a standard 3/8s or 1/2in socket input.

 

Ok, so another question...do you have the factory cargo slide out? They have a hidden compartment that's right behind the second row, accessible by a couple of little tabs that stick up.

 

What size are the lug nuts? I tried the manual to find out.

You mean like what size socket? It’s 21mm

 

Most wheel keys are hex drive, so the same socket for the other 5 lug nuts are used to drive the key (and the foot-long lug wrench included in the OEM tool kit can drive it).

 

I actually LOVE Toyota factory lug wrenches. You use your foot to "break" them loose. I can do a tire rotation in ten minutes. Im sure your spare is not "locked up", because I still have my original spare and it drops down no problem.

 

I went ahead and ordered the parts online. I didn't want to deal with hunting for a salvage yard kit and having it end up missing things. Thanks all for the replies!
