I have a 1997 4wd 4runner 3.4L with an automatic transmission. My problem is that my cruise control does not work at all. I get the cc light on the dash when I turn it on, but if I try setting my speed nothing happens.

Here is the troubleshooting I have went through:

    1. Brake Switch - Check the switch itself, tried lifting the brake pedal with my foot while setting cc, and ultimately checked it was working at the cruise control ecm. All good.
    2. Checked codes - No check engine light, no cruise control or abs codes when jumping the diagnostic port.
    3. Throttle Position Sensor - Took it off the vehicle, tested it, and even replaced it (long story but i initially thought it was the issue and had already ordered the part before troubleshooting)
    4. Stalk Operation - Ensured that the switches work with the cruise control diagnostic mode (hold the switch up or down and hold the on/off button simultaneously. We will be back to this feature) Also checked the switches function at the cruise control ecm. All good
    5. Cruise ECM - Checked that it is getting the proper voltage, I am unsure on how to test if the unit is bad apart from that.
    6. A Large variety of other troubleshooting steps - I essentially went down the entire troubleshooting process that is laid out in the FSM.
    7. Checked Brake lights - No LED’s all of my lights are operational, even front park lights and headlights.

With the troubleshooting steps I’ve went through laid out, here is my main question and issue now.

    • When going through the cruise diagnostic feature (the hold down on stalk while holding on/off button) my understanding is that the cruise light should remain lit, and should also start flashing when going over 25mph. Mine does not do this. The light comes on for a second to verify I am now in the diagnostic, but then goes out and doesn’t come back on until I press any of the stalk buttons. Pressing the stalk results in a series of flashes which demonstrate the switches are working.

I initially figured this was from my vehicle speed sensor, but after testing and also replacing this part; the issue is still present. I really thought this would be my issue, common effects of the vss being bad is erratic shifting behavior (my vehicle gets stuck in 2nd gear when I first drive, especially when it is colder out) lurching into gear (My 4runner has always done this, very violently goes into drive or reverse no matter what) and a few other symptoms i can’t think of right now. I was very disappointed when this did not resolve my issue.

Does anyone have any ideas on what my issue could be? Or atleast other areas to check out? I apologize this is very long but I wanted to be as detailed as possible. Thank you in advance!

You say you went through the FSM, so you probably already visited the e-brake switch?

What about the neutral position switch on the transmission? That got flaky on my Gen5 and prevented cruise from working. Might also contribute to hard shifting. Not certain what Gen3 uses.

I haven’t looked at that, once i get off work i’ll take a look at that. Did you have any issues with the vehicle not starting? I haven’t experienced anything like that but i’m really ready to take a look at anything at this point.
