3 days ago the previous owner told me ... don't touch the sunroof button !

I did not plan to touch the sunroof button! but while fumbling around for the interior lights in the dark ... I touched the sunroof button.

The good news is the motor works and the whole system seems smooth.

BUT ... how in the world do you get the sunroof to stop at the right closed position. It seems to go from wanting to open fully ... and wanting to tilt up.

Is the process really just "time your button release perfectly" ??

Not sure what you mean. Mine only "goes up" at the end of the going back. At least that's what I recall. I have only let it go up once since I rolled it 15 years ago. I had to have someone else push the button while I guided it from the roof to get it back closed. But it goes back and forth just fine

    Up, down and all around!

On my 2000 Limited with the roof fully open I would just hold the switch to close and the roof would automatically stop in the fully closed position, while still holding the switch. No overshoot and not popping (tilting) up until I released the button and depressed it again.

    I just did more testing.

When I press and release the open side of the rocker button … the sunroof fully slides back and stops.

When I press and hold the close button (front of rocker) … the roof starts to slide closed and automatically stops about 3 inches SHORT of being closed.

It seems like the system has forgotten where closed is ??

    It's normal

It's a safety feature from the factory

It's designed to stop a few inches before close then you push the button again to fully close it

Apparently some humans are really stupid and have gotten their head or hands caught in the sunroof

And now you know why the rest of us have to push the damn button twice

Yes. Some were children. They would stand on the console with their heads out of the sunroof and accidentally hit the button and it would kill them.

On my Nissan, I have to "teach" it where the forward and rearward stops are if the battery is ever disconnected. It takes about a half-dozen presses of the button in the "open" direction to get it to go all the way back, then the same process pressing the button in the "close" direction a number of times to teach it where the "home" (closed) position is.

Maybe the OP's vehicle just needs to re-learn the limits?

I read somewhere there's a way to bypass the 2step close deal on a 3rd gen but I can't remember where I found it

I'll see if I can find that little info nugget and post it up here

That would be a good find !
I have read about a "teaching home" thing as well, but that was for gen4.
